… And Then I Blinked

Just yesterday—it seems—I discovered my little daughter Rachel sneaking candy from a hidden Halloween stash. She adored anything sweet, as I think you can tell by this joyful, sticky photo of her devouring (and wearing) her favorite treats.

… and then I blinked.

Gone is the little pinafore and the bow on her head.
Gone is the sticky hand clutching the lollipop.
Gone is the mischievous little child I remember.

I blinked, and suddenly my Rachel is a beautiful, smart, talented young lady—celebrating her Sweet 16 just last week.

Rachel is now driving (eeks!) and dating (double eeks!) and I have to say how very proud I am of the woman she is becoming: she’s kind yet independent, open to new ideas but steadfast in her values, and she is choosing great friends and worthwhile activities to make her teenage years fun and rewarding. To celebrate Rachel’s special day, we planned a party that Rachel has been dreaming of forever. We invited a group of her closest friends for a sunny day at Lagoon, a nearby amusement park.

For the long ride to the park, we surprised her with a stretch Hummer to carry all the party-goers. It was a hit as big as the vehicle itself! David and I drove behind the Hummer all the way to Lagoon, and we could see the flashing neon lights inside the car and at times, we could even hear the music playing. It was quite the party on wheels. At the park, the weather cooperated perfectly for all the rollercoaster riding and hotdog eating the kids could handle. I was impressed by the caliber of these fine teenagers who were so respectful and appreciative of all the fun that came their way.

As I look at the photos taken at the party, I marvel at Rachel—she grew up so quickly! Then I look closer at the photos: Her eyes are the same deep brown stars that twinkled when she was a little girl. Her smile is every bit as playful. And she still adores anything sweet. Rachel, my Rachel: who could have imagined that you would become the sweetest delight of all? I adore YOU!
