A couple of months ago, I was asked to accept a new assignment in my church—it was to be the “humanitarian service” leader. Now that’s a pretty hefty title to tackle, and I’ve been eager to learn about all the different responsibilities and opportunities it carries. To get a better idea of what our local church members can do to serve our community, our state, our country, and even the world, I recently toured the Humanitarian Service Center in Salt Lake City. Let me tell you, the enormity and efficiency of this operation absolutely took my breath away! At the conclusion of the tour, I watched a short film that detailed the many needs the center still has and how local church members, like those in my position, can help. Honestly, tears came to my eyes as I thanked God for my blessings and the wonderful opportunities we have to make the world a better place. I left desiring to be more generous with my time and talents.
Last week we held a quilt-making event at my church. It took a few months to prepare but with the help of many wonderful women we were ready for its success. We had a grand time tying 20 baby quilts in one evening for babies and their mothers in countries around the world. It may seem like a small thing to do, but I know it will mean so much to them. I feel grateful and happy with the way our evening turned out. Here are a few pictures of our terrific event.

ReplyDeleteRecently I commented to my scrappin' buddies that I believe our crops are the new age quilting bees! We gather around the love of a craft, spending the day together sharing our joys, sorrows and talents....and of course, chocolate! I've been thinking about incorporating this idea into a class.
Well, now I realize that quilting bees are still alive and well. You can count on women to carry on tradition!

That is so wonderful! What a great thing to have a church that reaches out beyond themselves. It looks like you had quite the turnout for your quilt tying night. Just think of all those babies those quilts will comfort!
ReplyDeleteIts the small things that mean alot and go along way!!! One thing our Church did was we cut sheets into strips and wound them for bandages for Africa and Belize. Can't remember the specifications but this is a HUGE need over there.....something to think about!
