Question: If you could have a 'do-over' with Close To My Heart, what would it be?

Answer: The mistakes we make are often indelible, so this one is easy to answer! If I could have a do-over in my business, it would be to invest in the best and brightest PEOPLE first, then make investments in facilities and equipment second. I've always been a stickler for working with excellence, and as the business became profitable, I wanted to acquire my own machines, from rubber vulcanizers to wood shapers to die-cutters, and of course, great warehouse and office space to house everything in. While these are noble pursuits, in retrospect, what I needed even more to support growth was leadership, strategic experience, and trustworthy partnership. I tried to do too much on my own and I didn't make those key appointments right from the start.
Luckily, I've learned from experience! Today, I have an amazing leadership team of vice presidents: Monica, who has been with me since the early days (I just needed to move her out of data entry and in to leadership faster!); Kristine, who is a dynamo of energy and strategic innovation; and Brian, who is a master of multiple disciplines from finance to information technology. The vision they bring and the wonderful teams they lead really make Close To My Heart what it is today - not the die-cutters!

A Do-Over?

If I could do a "Do Over" it would be to make sure I journaled on all my scrapbook pages. You see I had my son when I was 27 and at 30 I had a stroke. I lost 5 to 6 years of my memory. That included my wedding, pregnancy and birth of my son. Now I look back at pictures and I don't know or remember where we are or how old he is. I learned the hard way that my handwriting is better than not journaling at all. If I could have a do over it would be that for sure.

My "do over" advice to others would be to not go backwards and re-do albums (as many of us wish we had time to do!), but to put energy into the present projects and use the selective "best" photos. Don't think you have to use them all!

ReplyDeleteNo event is too small to celebrate. Having lived in places that I LOATHED at the time I did not capture my daily doings; the homemade bread on the dinged up counter, the window that rattled at night as I waited for hubby to return, the snow filled country road that seemed so daunting to travel. Instead I wasted my time crying over the things that weren't.
Do Over! Start today. Capture everything and celebrate. Especially when you don't want to! It's all too short to keep waiting for a better tomorrow.
Wow - this is a great post - I want to print it and all the comments to ponder over later. I'm working on my Do Over right now - keeping better financial records!! :-)

Thank you everyone for the great advise and tips. In my pursuit to finish pages, I too leave the journaling for later. This is a lesson learned. As for the tips from Mrs. Lynton, thank you for the wonderful insight. This is something I'm still putting into practice...that moving forward is better with great people and great relationships. Thanks for selecting my questions. ;)
ReplyDeleteI don't think thats' a do-over at all.. I think we must falter to come to higher ground.. To realize what you had is what makes you better..You can only know where your going when you know where you've been...
