I have always loved any way of preserving memories, and
keeping a journal is certainly one of the best ways to make precious memories last.
But for many of us, journaling began back in the days of diaries that had a
lock and a key in order to protect the secrets hidden within. Keeping secrets
seemed so important as a child! But the secret is out on today’s episode of
Artbooking Made Easy, which features the top secret mini album keys on pages 42
and 43 of the Artbooking booklet.
There are so many good ideas here to inspire you when
working on your own projects! All of these techniques can be altered and
adapted to fit your skill level and your specific projects.
Let’s first take a look at the “I Adore You” page. Even
though the keys are designed for a mini album, you can still use them on any
layout. Here, for example, the folder cutouts from page 42 become perfect photo
mats. They were just scaled down to 6 ½" using the Real Dial Size, and
then cut in half where they would normally have been folded to make a folder.
This alphabet overlay is adorable just by itself, but Carlie showed us how it was incorporated into the title of the page by cutting out the overlay in several different colors and then using the letters to create the "I Adore You" title. Contrasting colors can create really
eye-catching details. The layering technique was also used on the “approved”
stamp. Layering different colors gives it a whole new dimension!
My favorite element on this page is definitely the ruffles
placed underneath the word “adore.” This is such a terrific technique that can
add more dimension to your projects. To create these ruffles, all you need is a
bone folder for those precise folds. For the red ruffle, score your
paper at every ¾" and every ¼". You could use either glue or, like
you see here, machine stitching to keep it folded down together. To make the
yellow accordion ruffle, you just score the paper every ¼". These ruffles would be a great way to dress up
any project!
Notice also how the artist has added a fun detail in the
hand stitching around the edges with these chevron arrows. With the stitching
guide, it’s simple to do running stitches or zigzag stitches, but let your
creative juices flow and see what other stitching patterns you can create.
Now, speaking of diaries, this mini album is the perfect
size to document a personal journey, a favorite vacation, or just life’s
everyday details.
As Carlie showed us in the video, this little pocket on the front cover is found in the top
secret keys, and it’s the perfect place to tuck away all those items that you
don’t want seen. Throughout this mini album, different
pockets and pouches found on these keys were used to store movie stubs, concert tickets,
and other sentimental mementos.
I can’t get enough of embossed paper! (Which reminds me,
there are only a few days left for our February “Embossing is Boss” promotion!)
It adds just the right amount of detail to otherwise plain paper and requires
hardly any work at all. But always remember, to avoid tearing or warping the paper when embossing, load the paper with the grain and not against it into the embossing folder and make sure that the width of your paper doesn't exceed the edges of the folder.
This simple technique always catches my attention! Here, the
artist first stamped the letters from the Framework Alphabet stamp set with the
pigment inks. You’ll want to use the pigment inks for this technique because
although they require a bit more drying time, they are thicker than the regular
stamp pads and won’t smear when you use the blending pen overtop. Once the ink
is completely dry (you can heat set it to speed up the process if you'd like), use the
blending pen to fill in the color from bottom to top. You want to start with
the lightest color and then go over it with darker colors to create this fun
ombre effect. Try experimenting with different stamps and ink colors and see
what you can come up with!
I love the elements on this page. One of the overlays on
page 42 is shaped like a page out of a notebook, and one of the stamps that
comes with the Artbooking Collection (My Acrylix™ Take Note)
includes the notebook-page lines for a 4" cutout. There are two different
overlay cutouts, one cut at 4" and one at 5 ¼", Real Dial Size. The
top one was stamped with the notebook lines and used as a journaling card. The
bottom one was stamped with a mini stamp and used as a background piece. It
goes to show that you can use the same shape in different sizes and colors
together to create a unique, eye-catching page.
I hope something on one of these two pieces of artwork has
inspired you. Now go and take that inspiration and incorporate it into whatever
you’re working on right now! And if you don’t have the Artbooking cartridge
yet, here’s your chance! Leave a comment here, on YouTube, or on our Facebook
page about the best secret you’ve ever kept—a surprise, an announcement, or
just some good news—for a chance to win your own Artbooking cartridge! I’ll
announce the winner next Monday.

Love all three of the cartridges but this one really takes my paper crafting to a new level. Thank you CTMH for the wonderful products.
ReplyDeleteI am not very good at keeping secrets...I always have to tell. When you get pregnant...most doctors recommend you wait until the 1st trimester is over to make your pregnancy public. That never worked for me...even after a few miscarriages I still could not contain the joy of finding out I was pregnant. I had to tell everyone! Creating a new life is such miracle...who can keep it a secret? Thanks for the chance to win CTMH's Artbooking Cartridge. I hope to create a "Top Secret" album of my own soon!
ReplyDeleteI kept the secret that my sister was pregnant with twins.
ReplyDeleteI love secrets! I can keep a secret but I don't think I want to keep this a secret!!
ReplyDeleteLove all the cartridges that CTMH puts out with cricut. I'm just starting out as a CTMH consultant and love having the chance to win anything.
ReplyDeleteMy best secret is not so much a secret! I LOVE Close To My Heart products and ideas. My best supprise was almost 11 yrs ago when I was pregnant with my last child(other 2 children are boys) and my Baby Girl Courtney was born! I dont know what I was gonna do with another boy! ReplyDeleteI love mini albums and this one is fantastic!
ReplyDeleteThe secret is out....telling everyone about this awesome cartridge.
Silly goose, I can't tell you my best kept secret!!
ReplyDeleteLOVE LOVE LOVE that mini album. Can't wait to try some of those fun cuts!! The best secret I have kept is that I was in love with my husband long before we got together. :)
ReplyDeleteOk now you really have me thinking...Not good at keeping secrets..lol...Ok a vacation I had planned for my granddaughter with lots of Barbie surprises...that was very hard for me because again I am terrible at keeping secrets...so for the 2 weeks prior I had to stay away from her and not talk on the phone tell her I was on a work project very busy....it was hard....But I have all of the pics I can scrap with this Cartridge to excited at the possibility of winning...Thanks so much for this great giveaway offer...CTMH is the bestest.
ReplyDeleteI had to keep the secret that I was engaged until my husband to be asked my parents permission and blessing. We were both in the army and stationed in different states, (NY and TX). So I had to wait until he came to NY.
ReplyDeleteThat I was pregnant with my third baby. No one expected it!
ReplyDeleteWith a 3 year old daughter, I find that I'm always keeping secrets. Mostly the secret has to do with a special event coming up. If I tell her about the event too far in advance, all she will talk about is "when is such and such going to happen, mommy?" I'd rather her enjoy her day and not be anxious about what's coming next so special events are surprises for her. Play dates, parties, and special guests coming to stay are good secrets to keep until the time is right to share them.
ReplyDeleteThe best secret that I ever kept was getting our new puppy for Christmas 2012! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI just order a cricut today with hopes of getting the CTMH cartridges!! I"m the oldest of four sisters and learned that my mom have a baby before I was born that she put up for adoption. She asked me not to tell my younger sisters as she wanted to wait a few years before telling them. That was very hard (but I did get to meet my half sister who was only 12 months olders than me).
ReplyDeleteLove that mini album! Secrets ... I am great at keeping them when someone tells me. I don't have many of my own but I remember when I was young my dad making me promise not to tell my mom about her Christmas boots! My brother on the other hand blew that secret!! Lol
ReplyDeleteLove this mini album. I am putting the finishing touches on four mini albums of our sister trip last year to the bahamas. We are flying to Cocoa Beach Florida this Friday morning and I plan to give my three sisters theirs on the plane made with this cartridge and last year's photos. Turned out really cute!
ReplyDeleteI'm really good at keeping secrets! I was on the final episode of the third season of Star Trek: Enterprise. I couldn't even tell my husband what happened on the episode for 3 months!
ReplyDeleteMy best secret: my huband and I knew our first child was a boy, but didn't tell anyone until he was born. We even registered for both boy and girl items!
ReplyDeleteBest secret I ever kept was a puppy I got for my husband's birthday one year. He had no idea and he was thrilled!
ReplyDeleteBest secret was flying one daughter from NJ to spend time with her sister in MI. The surprised look on her sister's face was priceless.
ReplyDeleteThe best secret is one I am keeping right now! My daughter's birthday is in August, but I bought her birthday gift last October! It's hidden in my craft room, and I am just itching to let her have it!
ReplyDeleteI am not good at secrets either. Christmas is always a challenge for me. I love to hide gifts. Sometimes I forget where i his something and find them after Christmas. I guess that makes it a special gift then.
ReplyDeleteI have a secret stash of chocolate in the pantry. :) I love that ombre effect, I'm going to try that on my next project!
ReplyDeleteThere are times when I have been able to keep secrets and then there are those when I haven't been able to maintain the secret. I keep trying to find little things to share with others - find what they like and then add that into their day when they least expect it! I think those little "treat" secrets are fun to look forward to - I always like the anticipation of surprising others with just the right thing! I can see using Artbooking to create some special LOs and cards for my family and friends.
ReplyDeleteBiggest secret I've ever had to keep happened last year. We decided to work on having a second child early last year. We had a miscarriage in September, but found out we were pregnant again right before Thanksgiving. Unlike with our previous pregnancies, we decided to wait a little while before telling anyone. We only waited until Christmas (I was about 9 weeks along by that point), but it was SO hard to keep quiet during that time.
ReplyDeleteI am not good at keeping secrets so I will tell about a secret that was kept from me. A co-worker had to take another co-worker to the ER because she hurt her foot when we were at lunch together. I went back to the office to let everyone know what happened. While at the ER they wanted to do x-rays, but could not, because LB was pregnant. My co-worker (and office mate) had to keep the secret from me until LB was ready to share. I totally understood though, but was shocked that CJ could keep that secret. :-)
ReplyDeleteA surprise baby shower for my best friend. I arranged it all behind her back and she had no idea!
ReplyDeleteI love this cute little mini-album! Thank you so much, CTMH, for all your inspiring projects! The best kept secret I had to keep (which was very hard) was my sister's pregnancy! I wanted to talk about it so bad, but I had to wait 3-4 months before everyone else knew!
ReplyDeleteVery cute mini album! So many uses and what a fun gift to give! Best secret I ever kept was my own pregnancy years ago. We wanted to keep it a secret until we could go and tell our parents!
ReplyDeleteThis is my favourite Artbooking project posted yet! I love it! The best secret I ever kept was my first pregnancy, until we could deliver the news in person. Thankfully I didn't have to wait too long!
ReplyDeleteI would LOVE this cartridge. I scrap mostly pages and would love the ease and set up of this cartridge. My most kept secret was being pregnant with my third child. He was five years after our last child and was quite a surprise to us as well as others!
ReplyDeleteSecretes, Oh the secrets I could tell. I will start with.... no cant give that one away . Did you hear....... no can't tell that one ether. I guess I just can share a secret.
ReplyDeleteSecrets? Hmmm. I think the best one I ever kept was when my baby sister was pregnant with her first baby. At the time I lived in the Poconos in Pennsylvania and she lived in Birmingham, AL. It was not easy for us to see each other often because of the distance and our work/family/life schedules. Her friends and our family planned a baby shower for her in Alabama and I told her that I couldn't come. Well, I packed up my two kids who were young at the time and drove all the way down. We hid in a back room at the shower until she had arrived and then after about 10 minutes we came out and surprised her. To see her face and to know how happy she was that we made it was worth the trip. I am just glad she didn't go into labor!!! :D Thanks for a chance to win.
ReplyDeleteHmm, so many fun little secrets through the years! One fun one was a surprise 40th birthday party for my husband -- even our girls kept it a secret! Thanks for the chance to win!
