You already know I love art and creativity. But does it surprise you to know that one of my greatest loves is math? That’s right! I love the logic of formulas, shapes, and proportions. In fact, I think it’s my love of math that’s helped me design almost 1,000 scrapbook and card patterns (so far!). I can look at a 12" x 12" canvas and envision the exact measurements for the perfect mat, how many photos would look right on a page, or where to position a title. It isn’t guesswork, it’s logic!
My love of analytical thinking has also translated well into the business side of Close To My Heart. I love being the strategic head of the company as much as I enjoy leading the creative side. In fact, I really enjoy Wednesdays, which are our financial review days. I pour over our sales reports, P&L statements, and trends summaries, for starters. Many people might think that sounds dull, but it’s where we can achieve the height of creative thinking for the business. It’s a little like looking at a 12" x 12" canvas: when you examine the symmetry closely to understand what’s happening, you can use what you know to create beautiful results every time.
I’m so grateful for a love of logic, equations and math. Not only does math support my creativity, it supercharges it! Not only does it give me an understanding of business, but also I have a real passion for the business that has helped Close To My Heart grow over the years… and me, too!

It's interesting to hear that you like math. I'm glad that you do. I sometimes think that analytical people maybe aren't necessarily creative. As an accountant, I certainly have my fair share of analytical thinking and love numbers but I also love exploring my creative side.
ReplyDeleteWell, I am extremely thankful for your ability to "see" those page and card designs! This is something that has always escaped me. I loved the stamping and embellishing but the layout was never quite balanced! Now that I have found CTMH, with your help, I can quickly set up my page design and then enjoy the part I love, adding the special touches that turn those pages into personal testimonials to my children. Thanks for making scrapbooking something I love even MORE than I ever thought possible!!
ReplyDeleteHurray for Math! As a math and science teacher, my hope is for students to see that math and science are both deeply creative ventures. What a shame that so many people see creativity and logic as mutually exclusive. Thank you for sharing with us how creativity and logic are partners in your success.
