When I think of Valentine’s Day, I’m flooded with memories of a very special valentine I made in Mrs. Merrill’s first grade class. It was a lovely red construction paper heart, decorated with a lacy white doily and sweet conversation hearts.
I remember writing “I love you, Mom.” It was the most beautiful thing a six-year-old could have ever created! I remember everything had to be placed perfectly. I envision my first-grade classroom abuzz with sticky Elmer’s glue, candies and elated six-year-olds. I love this wonderful holiday and the abundance of heart-shaped cards and letters it brings…especially those made by little hands.
It’s no coincidence that my love of Valentine’s Day and those early memories influenced my choice of name for the company: Close To My Heart. I wanted the company’s name to capture that same special feeling I had as a child on that Valentine’s Day—and it does! Every day at Close To My Heart feels like a celebration of youth, creativity, and love. In fact, I even used a large red heart to adorn the cover of my first catalog!
As we approach February 14, I’m elated all over again—I love Valentine’s Day…and I love celebrating it every day at Close To My Heart.

My favorite valentine wasn't a card actually, it was a gift from my dad - that was over 40 years ago and I still have it. It is a wooden box, smells sort of cedar-ish. I has a design carved into the wood, a picture painted in the center and has a mirror on the inside. It was filled with chocolate candy. What makes it so special is that it was purchased by him (not him and my mom), just for me. He has never done anything like that for me since. It was a once in my lifetime unexpected gift from him and I will always treasure it. That one year I was his valentine! Martha Dearinger
ReplyDeleteValentine's Day is one of my two favorite holidays (Christmas is the other). It's also my birthday, so it's very special every year. For the last 10 years, my husband has surprised me one way or another - last year it was a dozen roses in a trash bag full of shredded paper that I used for packing material. I love making my boys valentines and receiving the ones they make at school. They are always extra special.
ReplyDeleteMy little sister and I loved to play with our American Girl Dolls. It was definitely an obsession. We each had two, and I, especially, loved to play with their long, beautiful hair. One Valentine's, my parents got us the cutest little hair care caddy for them. It had every type of hair do-dad you can imagine! Definitely a fun Valentine's memory!
ReplyDeleteYou have to know that my husband isn't very romantic, well, not at all really. But he is a wonderful man, who makes me laugh everyday (and I'll take that over roses anytime). But one year, not so long ago, we were both, sick, while trying to keep life running along smoothly, house, jobs, kids, the usual. I think he was travelling a lot then too. However, we found ourselves at the pharmacy waiting for prescriptions to be filled. We were both so tired that we sat on a bench, which was facing the card racks. We looked at the cards... we looked at each other... and realized that neither of us had a Valentine for the other. Oops. My husband leaned over and after a bit of thinking selected a card and said, "If I was going to buy you a card this is the one I would have gotten you." I don't remember the card, but I do remember that we sat there and "exchanged" cards and laughs for quite a long time.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite valentine was also from my dad. A few months earlier I had lost my dog of 15 years. It was before I had children so she had been very special to me. Dad found a picture frame with a saying, "Dogs leave pawprints on our heart" Now that I have children, I enjoy all the homemade gifts they bring home from school. ReplyDeletemy favorite valitines gift came from a very special friend. it was the first year both my girls were out on there own. For some reason it really bothered me to have no one to share the holiday with. It was a workday and i was so tempted to stay home and moph rather than go and see and hear all the floweres and candy come in for the rest of the co workers. well i sucked it up and went in to find a rose on my desk with a note saying. You are loved very much, God it really put things into perspective. no matter what your sitution in life some one loves all of us.
ReplyDeleteI remember my Mom always getting a big box of Russel Stovers candy. We all wanted the carmel ones. I couldn't wait until I grew up and had someone to give me candy. Who knew that I would have to wait almost 40 yrs to find that special someone and now its Sees candy and roses...yes..I love Valentines Day!!

ReplyDeleteThe memories that come to mind for me are the days when my kids were younger and we handmade our valentines. One particular year, My daughter,Heather, baked BIG heart shaped Chocolate chip cookies, wrapped and topped with a matching heart shaped handstamped card. On the morning of Valentines day, I would prepare fun food like strawberry nestles quick and pink cupcakes! Those were good times!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite memories of Valentines are not only of seeing the roses my father had given to my mother. But of my younger sister & I receiving a single rose from my dad. It was simple, yet it meant so much. Not only was he thinking of my mom, but of us too.
ReplyDeleteMy favourite memory of valentines day was when I was a teenager. My dad surprised my mom, sister and I with valentine cards that he went and picked out for each of us. The thought of him standing in a store reading cards brings a smile to my face!! This was special because he had never done this before!!
ReplyDeleteSeven years ago was my first year teaching high school. I was so excited to have a group of kids that I would keep for all four year. We became a very close "school family". And their Senior year they made me a card that they cut various sizes of hearts and glued to the front, and wrote "To Momma Mueller". Every student signed that card. It was one of my favorite and most special moments as a teacher.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite valentine was the night I got engaged to my sweetheart. He told me he wouldn't ask me on Feb. 14 as it was too "expected" so I merrily went on with my dinner preparations, fancy cake with the icing sugar stenciled on top, etc. As we finished dinner, I asked him if we could bring the rest of the cake to the hospital where my sister was working. He went right along with my plans, and then suggested a drive. We ended up walking a golf course at the same location we went for our first date. He proposed and I agreed. Now, valentine's day is also a special anniversary...he still says I never said yes. He's right, I said, "I'd love to marry you!" Shirley K.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite Valentine memories have got to be when I was in elementary school and you'd make your little mailboxes or bags to hold all the valentines in. I loved decorating those and had a lot of fun giving out the valentines.
ReplyDeleteMy most memorable valentine's was when I was eight years old. I had my appendix removed in late January and was still recuperating at home. I was missing all the excitement of Valentine's day at school but my Mom helped me make my Valentine holder for school and took it and my valentine's for my class mates to school. I remember it being so pretty with ribbon threaded through the edges to hold it together and a big dangling bow. It was so exciting when my pouch came home filled with Valentine's from my classmates.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite valentines was from my boyfriend who is now my husband. He purchased a two picture frame - one side held our university logo and the other side was blank. He went on the computer and "drew" stick figures of us holding hands. The caption was "Liz and Andy Forever". He meant for this drawing to only be temporary until I put a picture of us in the frame but the drawing was so precious and from his heart that I have never replaced it with a picture. The frame from 17 years ago is in my crafting space and it is close to my heart!
ReplyDeleteMy DH and I have been married 15 years. During those 15 years, Valentine's Day pretty much comes and goes--I think DH may have taken me out once or twice for dinner. About 9 or 10 years ago, DH called me a couple times at work. After not getting any kind of response from me about my surprise, he finally had to tell me to look in my purse. He had bought me a heart pendant necklace. I was really surprised by it and to this day, it is pretty much the only necklace that I wear.
ReplyDeleteOne of my favorite was when we were poor and it was a few months before we got married. We had no money to get anything for each other. My husband came home from work (he was a janitor at the mall) with the 2 dozen of the prettiest long stem roses I've ever seen. The florist at the mall had given them to him to give to me. What a sweet man!

My husband proposed to me on Valentine's Day on a snow shoeing hike. Several milestones happened on this day making it more significant to us.

I love Valentine's Day (even more so now that I can relive it through my childrens' eyes. My favorite memory of Valentine's Day was in elementary school. It was a tradition for us to bring in an old shoe box and we'd each decorate them with construction paper, glue, and whatnot. Then come Valentine's Day (or as close as we could if it fell on a weekend) we would place our boxes on our desk and form a line and go around the room placing a Valentine in each person's box. It was so much fun!
ReplyDeleteI think my favorite Valentine has been from my daughter - she was 5 years old and the teachers had been working very hard in helping the kids with their cards. Each card was heart-shaped, each card had the sweet little hand "stamped" on the back, a photo of the child on the front and was laminated, hole-punched and dangling from a piece of yarn. At the little party, each child presented their cards.....each parent wore their "card" as a medal of honor. When my daughter (who's nearly 17 - yikes!!) is older, I plan on giving back some of the artwork I have treasured...but I think I'll keep that Valentine!
ReplyDeleteMy first time I hand stamped a Valentine was in 1992. I had three D.O.T.S. stamps that I had purchased at a party, and one was the cutest little bunny holding a carrot. I remember how proud I felt as I wrote, "Hopping by to wish you a Happy Valentines!" over my little bunnies that I had colored in with colored pencils. I only had one black ink pad, and such limited supplies, but it brought me just as much joy to create that as it does to make my Valentines today.
ReplyDeleteValentine's has never been a "big" holiday for me. I guess my most favorite was the one of 1984, well not the 14th of Feb. But the 15th of Feb. It is when I had my third and final baby. Now that was love and still is as I watch her become a mother (she has a 10 month old) in her own right. Happy Valentine's to you all, (debby)
ReplyDeleteWe didn't celebrate Valentine Day in the Soviet Union and my first memorie about something special on the Valentines day was in February 1998. It was the time when I first heard about God's love and I was wondering what kind of love is that and I really wanted to have that love for myself. I remember sitting all night long at the desk in my dormatory where I lived as a college student and drowing hearts with watercolors and then cutting them out with scisors. I made over 50 hearts with the sign "LOVE" on them and gave it to everyone I could think of. I have never paint that many hearts since that time that is why I remember that first Valentine selebration:)

My most memorable Valentine's Day was a few years ago. My husband was ready and waiting when I got in from work to take me out. He took me to a very romantic Italian Restaurant. They put us in a room with just a small candle lit on each table and we couldn't see to read the menu. We ordered several items we had never tried before and the evening was very romantic.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite memories of Valentine's Day involves helping my children prepare their cards for classmates, get treats ready for them to take to school and then to read through all of the cards they received at the end of the day. Now they are too old for school celebrations so Valentine's Day doesn't hold the same magic but I enjoy the memories!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite Valentines Days to remember are as a kid...cutting and pasting red and pink construction paper and adding the little doilies!! I always had alot of fun exchanging valentines with my classmates too. I remember one year some of the valentines we had, had little "cupids" on them and they were naked except for the small cloth they had on. (I'm sure my mom got the ones that were the cheapest or on sale!! The cool character ones were probably too expensive, I think we had charactar ones back then!!) Anyway, I remember giving one of the cupid ones to the boy I liked, unfortunately he laughed at me because my valentine was "naked"! I was probably in 4th grade, I was very embarassed at the time!! Anyway, I still LOVE cutting and pasting; and now I have some awesome stamps to use too!!

When we were first married some friends were asking us what we would do to celebrate Valentine's Day and my DH responded "every day is Valentine's day at our house". I thought this was cute. I would have to say my favorite Valentine's would have to be this year. My daughter just turned 5 and is very excited about making cards, baking cookies and decorating a valentine box for preschool. Just to see the excitement through her brings all the fun memories back of my childhood! Stacy
ReplyDeleteMy most memorable Valentine's was when I was about 6 years old. We had learned to cut out hearts in school. I was so thrilled to learn that, that I cut hearts out and made lots of Valentines for everyone. I learned that my Great-grandmother was sick, so I made her one and we went to visit her. She was very sick and my mother went in her room to visit with her while I stayed outside. Soon, I was called in to visit her and I gave her the Valentine that I had made especially for her. She hugged & kissed me, thanking me for the gift. That was the last time I ever got to see her because she passed away a few days later. So every time I see hearts handcut from pretty red paper, I think of her.
ReplyDeleteValentine -so many wonderful memories. But my favorite was about seven years ago. I was dating my DH and it was the first valentine we shared. A couple of months before we were driving up to Logan and I saw a small farm on the side of the road. The farm was covered with snow. I don't know why, but i told him I just thought it would be so cute to see a small pig in the snow. I could get see this cute little pig walking and making tracks in the snow. Wouldn't a pink pig in the snow be cute? Well on Valentine he got me some roses. 5 white roses surronding one pick rose. he said it was my pink pig in the snow. I knew then that he truly loved me and he listened to my ideas, and really cared, no matter how crazy they are. I love my husband very much and am grateful to be able to spend not only many valentines with him but eternity as well.
ReplyDeleteOur tradition is to go out big the weekend before Valentine's day and then do Little Caesar's pizza on the actual day :) Hubs and I have been doing that since we were dating and it is so fun to do now with kids, so that they feel included in the festivities.

My most memorable valentines day was when my boyfriend (now husband of 15 years) left a red long stem rose on the dashboard of my car with a sticky note that said "almost as pretty as you". What a nice surpirse that was when I opened the car door to go to work and found that. Happy Valentines Day!

ReplyDeleteSugar Cookies for my kids is a great memory as well. First decorated for them, then with them, and then watching them decorate them with their friends.
But my favorite Valentine's memory was one that I gave. It was our first Valentine's Day as a newly married couple. We didn't have any extra money for gifts and chocolates and flowers, so I got creative. I prepared my new husband a "Pink Breakfast". This included, Pink Pancakes and Strawberry Syrup, Pink Scrambled Eggs with chunks of ham (pink) in it and Orange Juice that also had food coloring added to try and accomplish the pink color as well. All the different items were different pinks and clashed with each other. It was so fun and it was rather delicious if I do say so myself. The best part was when my husband looked up and said, "Tell me you are not going to do this for St. Patrick's Day"
My favorite Valentine's Day memory is the year my husband and I moved into the dream house we'd spent nearly a year building. During the building process, we lived in a tiny and noisy apartment 50 miles away which we (not so affectionatly) referred to as the hovel. We logged lots of miles between the building site, our jobs, and the hovel each day. The afternoon of Valentine's Day, I met the building inspector at the new house, and he gave us our certificate of occupancy rather unexpectedly. I called my husband at work, told him we had the OC, and suggested we spend the night at the house that very night. He said no, until I told him I was already there with the coffee pot, the cats, and our sleeping bags. I know his priorities well . . . he might not have slept on the floor to keep me happy, but I was holding his coffee pot hostage, so along he came! Dinner that night was cold cereal by candlelight, and it couldn't have been anymore romantic for me. We were finally in the house we'd worked so hard together to build and it was heavenly. We still laugh about that night and my powers of (coffee) pursuasion!

My best Valentine's day was 2000 when my Hubby and I had our first date and first kiss!!! At the time I never thought we'd be together 9 years or marry, but I'm so thankful each and every day that he was my valentine that year :)
ReplyDeleteMy Dad passed away in January and I was going thru pictures to get ready for his service... I came across a picture that reminded me of a valentines day when I was about 9. He took me and my brother to the store and we bought all kinds of Valentine's stuff - paper heart doilies, conversation hearts, ribbon, etc - then the three of us proceeded to make the worlds largest valentine out of this huge box for my step-mom. It was tons of fun and so something my Dad would do. I loved that about him!
ReplyDeleteMy love language is gifts, so I of course, relish any holiday because it means gifts to me! I also love making a special spaghetti dinner for valentine's day with the white table cloth and red candles for my family. Before calling them to dinner, I put their Valentine candy and gift on their plate so when they come to the table, they see it right away. This year, I got a 10 year anniversary add-on to my wedding ring. I ADORE IT! I told my husband every time I look at it, it reminds me of how much he loves me.
ReplyDeleteWhen I was growing up, there were 5 of us kids in the house ~ and it could be crazy at times. A lot of the holiday stuff fell on my mom; she hid the Easter eggs, wrapped the Christmas presents, or took us trick or treating, but Valentine's Day was always my dad's doing. Even mom was surprised on Valentine's Day. Dad always bought us our boxes of chocolates, but they weren't just any boxes, he always made sure they reflected each one of us! To this day, my brothers and I talk about our special Valentine's from dad!
ReplyDeleteIn my twenties, I moved from Washington, DC, where my family was to San Francisco CA. My first Valentine's Day came about 6 months later. I had made many friends by then, but didn't yet have that special someone. Imagine my surprise when, at work, a lovely bouquet of pink and purple carnations arrived on my desk. I couldn't imagine who they were from. The card read, Love JW. Who could it be we all wondered? Maybe the president of the company whose initials were JW? No, I figured out pretty quickly that they were from my dad! He wanted to let me know he loved me, but also thought I could make JW be whoever I wanted! So sweet. Melissa Laverty

So to me, Valentine's Day is about the kids. ReplyDeleteValentine's Day brings an even greater feeling of love having my two precious daughters in my life. My favorite Valentine was the very first piece of artwork my then-two-year-old came home from daycare with. Decorated in red and pink, with sentimental toddler scribbling, huge blobs of glue and randomly scattered felt hearts. Placing Hailey's name and date on it means I will be able to remember this for years to come, and it will always remind me of the love we have for each other.

I love Valentine's Day (it must be the hopeful romantic in me). I remember the year I was 16. I spent an entire day making a Valentine for my boyfriend (and now husband). It was a green construction paper base with a large red heart and surrounding the heart was white lace. It took me forever to get that lace glued down. I, of course, wrote all the requisite gushy stuff and he loved it. Happy Valentine's Day everyone!
ReplyDeleteJeanette, your post brings back so many memories. I have a box full of those wonderful cards that my girls have made me over the years. But I think my favorite memory is last year. My husband and I were traveling over Valentine. I was getting dressed and he simply said "I love you, not just for the big things that you do for me. But for all the small stuff. Just for being you, and loving me for who I am." I could have cried. I will never forget that memory.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite Valentine's Day has to be in 2004. My then boyfriend and I had taken a trip to Las Vegas in November and he had teased me about getting married while we were there. But we didn't (I was dissappointed)and I thought he wasn't wanting to at all! For Valentine's Day, we went to an expensive resturant only because I had been given a gift card from a client. After dinner, he gave me a small box of chocolates which had me thinking "cheapskate". When I opened it there was a gorgeous engagement ring stuck in one of the chocolates!! I quickly closed the box, I was SO caught off-guard! He thought I didn't like it! Of course, I accepted his proposal and the ring. The waitress took our picture and on the way out of the crowded resturant, my new fiance kept telling everyone we passed "We're engaged", "she said yes!". It was so cute! We were married that same year on May 29th.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite Valentine's memories are from grade school. It was always so much fun to decorate our containers whether they were boxes, or simple paper sacks. I was pretty good at cutting out hearts of all sizes from construction paper, and I remember using a lot of them! I can still remember the smell the Elmer's glue and I loved getting to sprinkle glitter over the majority of the project. (Though I'm sure the teachers cringed...ha...ha!)
ReplyDeleteI have not read all the comments that have been posted. . . .but I am sure there are more than just a couple of people saying they don't need a special holiday once a year to profess their love. . . And of course our family feels the same way. I have made it a point that every day, and any moment we are away from each other we always leave with "I love you". SO, for Valentine's Day I didn't want my children to feel as though we didn't care about that day -- so I created a tradition that the "Love Bug" comes to visit us. He leaves out little gifts (no candy--they get plenty of that at school) and reminds us to keep our love strong in our family and with our friends. One year, he draped hearts of all sizes and colors on string in the hallway in front of their bedroom doors--each heart had a little message. I think that was the first year the "Love Bug" came. Every year just before Valentine's Day my kids always ask, "I wonder what the "Love Bug" will leave us this year." It's been great fun doing this and makes our Valentine's Day a little more meaningful for my kids.

ReplyDeleteThe first valentine memory that pops into my head was a few years ago. I had a night class, so my husband was at home. When I got home he had chocolate kisses all over the floor in the shape of I love you in sign language. Then he had candles lit all around. Though I have had many good days full of love, this is the first that popped into my head.

My favorite Valentine memory happened in grade three. It was the first year we were allowed to give out valentines in school. I remember us decoration our paper bags that were to be filled with cards. It was such fun to sit in school and be able to chat with friends while we decorated our bags with our favorite valentines decorations. At lunch we were able to deliver the cards to the class, the room was abuzy with excitement, and we all read our cards while eating and shared our favorites with friends. It was such fun as a child, I still Have all of the little valentines to this day.

My most memorable Valentine's Day was when my daughter, now a teenager, was in Kindergarden. She made me the best Valentine I could have ever received. It was red and pink and lacy; chopped up pretty good with scissors and glitter and glue and macaroni spray painted silver.
ReplyDeleteYou should have seen the pride on her face when she came running out of her classroom and handed that to me. Her little legs could hardly carry her fast enough!
We kept it on the fridge for quite some time. She told everybody (with pride) that it means 'she loves me the most'. So, now, every year I write the words 'I love you the MOST' in her Valentine card.
My favorite Valentine's memory is probably when my son was just 8 months old. I hadn't made cards in years, but I wanted to make my family Valentine's with him on it. I bought him a $5 red Valentine bear, put him in a white onesie on a white blanket on the couch and took his picture. He had rosie red cheeks from winter weather, so he looked like a little cherub. I cut large hearts out of red paper and framed his photo for the front of the cards. I typed up sayings and printed them on pastel papers to make conversation hearts for decorations. They were really cute! And to this day, "Red Bear" is his best buddy.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite Valentine's Day was 20 years ago. My husband and I had a sweet little 2-month old baby girl, our first child. I can still see her in the little red Valentine's outfit my mom got for her. In my mind, I can feel her soft little body as she snuggled up to me. She was one of the sweetest gifts my husband and I ever gave each other!

ReplyDeleteI adore Valentine's Day. My biggest thrill as a child came from the annual Valentine's exchange at school. Everyone would make a paper-bag card holder and tape it to their desk. Then near the end of the day, we'd all circulate around and drop off our little cards to each other. I can remember sitting around the dining room table at night reading, re-reading, organizing and just loving every last one of those cards.
ReplyDeleteThis year is going to be very special to me, as I've been working on my card to my hubby, and secretly designing him one from our little boy (9 months old, so its his first one). I'm putting his hand print inside, and letting him "sign" the card.
Even though my hubby isn't exactly the romantic type -- he saves every one of my valentines' cards... and I know I'll find this one "from" his son many years down the road.
I remember several years (it was kind of sporadic) that my dad gave each of us a card with a letter in it from him and sometimes chocolate or flowers. I still have some of those cards, and I treasure them.
ReplyDeleteMy FAVORITE Valentine Memory is from the year I was engaged to my Eternal Companion! He picked me up at my apartment and drove me to his apartment where he had set up a "romantic" dinner (bachelor style...) he made dinner and dessert. I just remember how "in love" I felt and to this day, Mitch makes sure I know that I am loved every day of our almost 17 years of marriage.

I think my most memorable Valentine was years ago... I was recently a single mom of two.... and "romance" was the FURTHEST thing from my mind. My son, who was in kindergarten at the time, came home with a card made in class, but I still have it. (If I was literate enough to post it, I would) On the outside, he had a picture of stick people, representing him and me, holding hands ~ but our arms are reeeally long, and there is a big blue circle (the world?) And inside the card he printed "Mom, I'm your litl (sp.) man"...
ReplyDeleteI kept that card to remind me in all the world he IS the only little man who maens THAT much to me!!!!! To this day, NOTHING has topped that gift!
I can't really pinpoint a favorite valentine just because I love every card my oldest son has made for me. However, there was one valentine's day that my children gave me my Canon Powershot A630 camera and a singing bear with a box of chocolates. That was special!
ReplyDeleteI can't think of any particular memory from the past, but the thing I enjoy most is making Valentine's with my oldest (the little ones not quite yet) for his class. Its extra special to make something unique and different from the standard store bought valentines.
ReplyDeleteEvery Valentine's day while growing up, my dad would always leave me flowers signed my secret admirer. They were a mini version of my mother's flowers. I always looked forward to finding my special gift on the kitchen table when I woke up the morning of Valentines Day.
ReplyDeleteA memory of Valentines day I will never forget is from 3rd grade. A boy gave me a heart necklace, but of course it was in secretcy. I remember opening it up in the girls bathroom when noone was around. I remember the big smile it put on my face. I never told my friends that I got it or who it was from. Now looking back, I wish I did. Oh well. LOL

ReplyDeleteValentine's Day is bittersweet in our family. My dear brother-in-law passed away on this day, leaving his wife and 2 small children. So.. Valentine's Day is a Hallmark occasion in our family.

ReplyDeleteEach year when Valentine's Day rolls around I think of one particular memory. I was 17, a junior in high school, and really thought I knew it all about life, love, and my place in it all. A few days before the 14th, I remember my father calling for me with excitement in his voice. As I came down the stairs he was holding a box of Barbie valentine cards, probably worth a buck. He stated that he knew I hadn't gotten any yet, probably because I was so busy, and didn't want me to be disappointed in not handing them out. All my teenager mind felt was mortification. Didn't he know how old I was?! That I was a mature adult who didn't participate in childish things?! But as I paused to answer him, I saw the look in his eyes and knew what the right thing to do was. I gave out the Barbie Valentines cards that year and smile remembering that I received some in return too!

My most memorable Valentines day -
ReplyDeleteMy grandfather died January 11th. Him and my grandma had celebrated their 50th anniversary just a month prior to that. So when that next Valentines day came a month after his death - - my heart went out to my grandma who was learning to be alone after being with her soul mate for 50 years. I sent my Grandma a dozen roses (I lived in another city so couldn't actually spend the day with her). She phoned me in tears when she received them and said that she had never received Valentines flowers before (my grandpa was the very practical sort!!) and that it meant so much that I had thought of her on that day. My grandma died that fall - - so that Valentines day was the only one she spent alone. I'll never forget it because it was a special moment shared between just the two of us.
My earliest memory of valentines is making valentines in elementary school. How I loved making a pretty valentine for my mom and dad. I also really loved getting all the pretty valentines and addressing store-bought valentines to each of my classmates. Oh, wait, remember the heart chains (like paper doll chains) we use to cut out from that continuous paper? What fun memories! Thanks for taking me back!

Valentine's Day always gives me fond memories of my Dad. Every year he would buy one large box of chocolates for mom, my sister and I to share. He would also hand pick a special card for each of us and take the time to personalize a message in each. We would have the best time each taking a bite of a chocolate to see what was inside! It was the one holiday of the year that DAD personalized a card, every other event was mom signing his name which made it extra special.
ReplyDeleteA valentine's day I will always remember is one about 10 years ago. I had just had surgery on my foot the day before and had made my husband a beautiful card beforehand so I'd be prepared. I knew I wouldn't be up and about for a while. We usually just exchange cards and maybe enjoy a nice dinner together - so I wasn't expecting the beautiful flowers that he had when he walked in the door that night. The newspaper that day had featured one of the florists making arrangements for Valentine's Day, and the arrangement she was working on in the picture was the one my sweet hubby brought home! I had mentioned how pretty it was - so he went and requested that exact arrangement. It was a day to remember!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite valentine memory was when my husband and were dating he decided to plan a trip for the weekend, just the two of us. He was a truck driver at the time so he visited a lot rest stops and got lots of brochures with information in them. Well I took the weekend off of work and we headed out. We headed toward Wisconsin, we live in Minnesota. I wasn't sure where we were going and he wouldn't tell me where we were going. We ended up in the middle of nowhere in a cabin/horse ranch all by ourselves. It was very seculded and very romantic. We spent the whole weekend enjoying ourselves. We visited this place numerous times afterwards until they closed it down. We wish it was still open to this day because we would love to go back.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite Valentine's memory is from right after I got married. I was working on Valentine's Day, and I arrived home to find my sweet hubby had prepared a wonderful dinner for me, complete with lovely table settings and romantic music. We were dirt poor and could not have afforded to go out to a fancy restaurant, but he had managed to make our first Valentine's a day to remember.
ReplyDeleteI never really grew up with valentine "presents" in my family. It was just about passing out those little valentine cards at school. So I can remember the first valentine "present" I received was from my husband, who I was just dating at the time in college. It wasn't just a movie or chocolates or anything you would expect to get, but --- and I know this sounds crazy, but toe socks! I was really into toe socks and he remembered :) Red and pink striped toe socks! that was the night of our first kiss.
ReplyDeleteWhen I look back over the years, I have many special valentine's to remember...but I think my most special memories come from the valentine's I got from my son when he was in elementary school. I have always been a single mother, and at times, it was hard to make ends meet...but my son Tyler, who is now 23 always made me the most beautiful cards...ones covered with glitter and glue or ones covered in doilies, or flowers, or as he go older ones made on the computer that were most of the time humourous. The four little words penned in each and every one of them are the most precious words in the world to me "I Love You, Mom!"
ReplyDeleteWhen I was teaching at a Christian school one of our bible stories encouraged me to have the student do cards for the elderly and sick. So that first year my students made handmade Valentine's and we mailed about 10-15 cards. It was such a sucess and in the following years we slowly added more names to our list (parents/grandparents)--by the 4th year we were sending out at least 50-75 cards (each kid made about 5-8 cards each) But the most important thing that was in the card was how God's love is important to us and each year I had a new way to show that. Best of all I started sending my own cards out--instead of Christmas cards I sent out Valentine's cards to my friends and family. I miss doing it with my students but I continued the tradition myself after I stopped teaching and have enjoyed doing it since. Sad to say this is the first year I haven't done this since I have been sick and have NO energy to get anything done....But thanks for letting me share my memory of good times... Tanya
ReplyDeleteI always remember in grade school (the 1950's)making our Valentine's holders that the teacher would attach to the blackboard at the front of the classroom. It was always with such anticipation that we got to go get our bags, take them to our desks and see who gave us Valentine's! Especially to see if a certain boy sent one...then we had cupcakes, candy and punch. Such sweet innocent memories!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite memory - Long before my card making days I made a card the size of a poster board for my husband (boyfriend at the time). I cut out hearts and glued them with elmers glue and used markers for my writing my sentiment. On the inside of the card was a big heart with an arrow shot through it with his name written all over it. And I wrote: "Cupid shot an arrow straight through my heart and it had your name written all over it!" He said that was the card that did him in and decided at that moment he was going to marry me!
ReplyDeleteMy favourite Valentine's was 10 years ago. I went to a friend's house to watch a hockey game and eat pizza. The next day I called my best friend to tell her how my evening went and as I was talking to her the doorbell rang and there was a flower delivery for me. I had no idea who they were from because I wasn't dating anyone. The friend I had been with the night before had sent me 1 dozen roses. We have now been married for 6 years and this Valentine's will celebrate 10 years of being "together".
ReplyDeleteMy favorite valentine memory is the many times my father had flowers and balloons delivered to the house to all of us kids. I am the oldest of six children (4 of us are girls), and I remember how surprised and excited we would be to see the flower delivery van coming down our driveway on Valentine's Day. The girls all received our own vase of flowers and the boys got metallic balloons with a note attached wishing us a Happy Valentine's Day. To think of his kids (in addition to his loving wife, my mother) was such a neat thing for my Dad to do for us and I will never forget that special tradition he started. It was something we always looked forward to and is a memory I will always cherish.
ReplyDeleteEvery year since my boys were little I have made a special Valentine's dinner and placed a small box of chocolates on their dinner plates. They were always so eager to open them but had to finish dinner first. I never thought it meant much to them until after my oldest had moved out. It was about six months after he left that we were talking on the phone and he told me that while he loved being on his own, it was only then that he realized how much he had come to expect those little touches I added to the day - and specifically mentioned the little boxes of candy on the dinner plates. That was truly a heartwarming moment for me because we moms tend to feel invisible a lot of the time.

ReplyDeleteI think back to when my sister and I were little girls, and every Valentine's Day my father would come home with our gifts. My sister and I would get little heart shaped boxes filled with chocolate candy, and my mother would get the big heart box. He would say that he had to have something special for "his girls".....every time I pass the candy aisle at Valentines display, my eyes get misty thinking of the man who used to be....
My husband and I started dating in High School. We had been dating for 2 1/2 months and he had still not kissed me. On Valentines day (1987) we went the the school "Sweethearts dance". They had a marriage booth and we went to it. When they said, "you may kiss the bride" he did. I think we were both shocked.

Valentines Day.....hmmmm....I do believe that my favorite memory is the year my grandmother of 90 gave me the little chocolate box that her husband had given to her on Valentines Day in there first year of marriage. It is the most beautiful little red oval box, with a cameo style design with a doily inside....I cannot imagine how many hours he had to work to bring it home to his beautiful new wife. Just to put it into perspective.....I do believe they were married in 1926!! It holds its honored spot in my china cabinet.

My most memorable Valentine's Day is in fact this year. I hand made valentine's cards and candys for my son to passout for his class. When I showed him what I created the love in his eyes and the warm hug he gave me as he said I love you reminded me that even though we buy our kids all the toys they could want, it those little things from the heart they love the most.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite memory was the first one with my now husband. We had recently gotten married and he deployed shortly there-after. He made sure that not only did I get a dozen white and a dozen red roses but my 10 year old daughter got roses delivered to her at school. I thought it was so thoughtful. We were a package deal for him, for sure!
ReplyDeleteMy daughters are now both in college, but when they were quite little I decided to use a Valentine's idea I had seen in a magazine. I cut out huge paper hearts and wrote one word on each heart. I wrote,"We love you very much, Heather and Ashley Love, Mom and Dad" and had the paper heart trail start from their bedroom door and lead down the hall to the kitchen table where there Valentine's treats were waiting for them! Their faces were priceless as they read the message, walking down the Valentine's Trail!

ReplyDeleteguy/girl could buy a pink carnation for a special person and have it delivered by the council members, all day long even while people were in class. It was so exciting seeing that flower coming into your class room and hopeing it was for you. Mark ( just a friend at that time) was the president of the student council and boy did he get into the job. He dressed up as cupid, diaper and all and delivered a very special flower to me. He asked me out on a date. I was so shocked at his appearance and honored to be the recipient of that flower. I will never forget that and my children love the story. : )
When I was a Freshman in college, I didn't have a boyfriend around Valentine's Day and was feeling lonely. Valentine's Day came around and my roommate got roses from her fiancee. Imagine my surprise when a florist called and said I had flowers waiting for me. It was a beautiful bouquet with an even more beautiful note "To my sister who is the best valentine any guy could ask for! Love, (one of my brothers)". ReplyDeleteValentine's Day has always been a relaxed, laid back sort of holiday for me. I've never spent a lot of time on it. My husband and I don't exchange gifts, although I usually make him a card. Two years ago, though, it was different. My husband had gone to work by the time I came downstairs in the morning. There on the table was a gift box and a card for me. The card said, "I just wanted to make you happy." So sweet, I thought. But I laughed out loud when I opened the box. He had given me Happy perfume! I told him years ago that I loved that scent. I thanked him later and reminded him that we had said we weren't going to exchange gifts. He just smiled and said that he couldn't wait to do this until our anniversary in August. That made me smile all over again.

ReplyDeleteMy just-turned 8 year old Nathan, has a "girlfriend" named Victoria. She is very adorable and they are very cute. I met her mother this past weekend at his birthday party and we discussed their relationship...that Victoria had come to her and asked if she could have a boyfriend.... He had told me that they "split up" because his best friend Sebastian wanted to "date her" and them being best buddies and all, he was okay with it. But.....as he was making Valentine's Day cards for his classmates, I found a poem he wrote for her. He said he read it to her and told her he loved her and she said yes and they would hold hands on Valentine's Day (although I guess it will be Friday since they won't see each other Saturday). Every year I was so excited for Valentine's Day! We'd have so much fun at school making Valentine's bags and decorating the classroom. It was great fun thinking about the day we'd get to open our Valentine's!! But every year - from 1st through 6th grade - I was sick on the day of the Valentine's party!! I was either running a fever, had the flu, and in sixth grade, I had the chicken pox. When my son came along, I was determined to make his first Valentine's party at school special. We made homemade Valentine's, I had made treats. Guess what? He came down with chicken pox and couldn't go to his Valentine's party!! So I called up the mothers and found out which children had already chicken pox. I put up decorations, made some Valentine's boxes, and we had a party at home. 10 little children and a very happy Mom had a great Valentine's celebration that day!!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite valentine wasn't a card or box of chocolates, but gift from my stepfather. My stepfather was a very quite man and didn't show feelings very well. My birthday is in February and can you image my surprise when on the day after Valentines Day I open my eyes to see a gift on my bed. My 16 birthday was in a few days and he had purchased a gift for me in honor of it. I rushed to open it and found a beautiful round watch on a gold chain. Then I opened the envelope and read the words he had written. He said that I had bought much joy into his life and that "Time" was all he had to offer me. His time was well given and we had many years together building our daughter and father relationship. My dad died on Dec2/ 08 and now that watch means more to me than it ever did. I thank God for the man who married my mom and held me in his arms and his heart as his daughter. I only hope I lived up to his ecpectations.

ReplyDeleteMy favorite memory of Valentine's has to be 1998. it was my first Valentines with my hubby. We had zero money, so my mom gave us a coupon for buy 1 prime rib, get one free at Steak and Ale. We didn't even know what prime rib was, but thought it must be fancy. LOL We got all dressed up and my mom took pictures of us in her living room, like we were going to prom. ReplyDeleteMy husband told me from day one he was not a flower and card kind of guy. So most Valentine's we just go eat and maybe catch a movie but we don't exchange gifts. Well one year, out of the blue, I got a dozen roses sent to my work. Everyone commented on them and it made me feel very special because I didn't expect it. I am a teacher also and I work in a school where many of the children can't afford gifts for the teacher. Most years a hand full of them will bring me a small box of chocolates, a sucker, or a card and their little faces beam with excitement to give me a gift.
ReplyDeleteI have a childhood memory that sticks with me. In the first grade we made mailboxes to have our Valentines delivered to. They were made out of milk cartons, wrapped in aluminum foil, with heart shapes affixed on the outside. (I'm dating myself). I still remember the excitement of not only the receiving of the cards, but the excitement of having "mail" and how special that was. I think that's why CTMH's cardmaking is so special. Aside from the enjoyment of making something for someone, there is something to be said about snail mail -- finding a card in our mailbox with a meaningful message from someone close to us.

Valentine's Day is special to me because my Father helped make it that way. Not only did he always love on my mom that day, but he also made sure to include me, his only baby girl! Always flowers, chocolates and a wonderful dinner out. He made it a point to let us know in his cards specifically what he loves about us. I still keep all of the cards that I received from him for Valentine's Day and hope to make a Memory Keeper box to hold them in... My hubby has a lot to live up to! <3
ReplyDeleteI started dating Bob during the month of December. When our first valentine came around only 2 short months into our relationship I was not sure what to expect. At the time he lived in Chicago and I lived just north of Boston.
ReplyDeleteSoon after I arrived at work on Valentines day I was greeted with a delivery of 12 long stem roses. I was so surprised and of course thrilled that he had made the effort to send me roses.
I worked with a bunch of men and only a few women and many of my fellow employees commented on his effort. The women told me he was a keeper and the men told me that I had him wrapped.
Well the day got even better when we were having our standard company Friday lunch when the FedEx man arrived with a box for me. It was a Vermont Teddy Bear with a small box of chocolates. Now the men in the office rolled their eyes and the ladies started to wonder out loud what their husbands/boyfriends had planned.
To this day I remember the effort Bob made to make that day special for me even thought we were miles apart. The ladies were right we was a keeper as a matter of fact I have kept him for 16 years and have 2 children with that thoughtful man that became my husband.
my favorite Valentines day was in my senoir year in high school. that is the day i was given my engagement ring. this july we will celebrate 23 years!!!!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite Valentine's memory is the very first "To My Wife" Valentine I received from my husband. We had been married only six months and it was/is a very special memory. NOW my sons and I (10 & 7) make Valentines every year for their classmates and their dad.
ReplyDeleteValentine's Day always brings me to remember my special Valentine - my late husband, Marc. From the time I met him he always made a fuss over Valentine's Day and regardless of where we was away working or what we were doing that day, the day always brought me red roses from him. After our daughter was born, she received pink roses from her daddy. Each year brought one more rose in the bouquet. We spent 13 Valentine's Days together before he was killed in a car accident so the last bouquet I ever received from him had "13 lucky roses" as he wrote on the card. I lost him 3 short months later. This Valentine's Day would have been number 21 and I often wonder if he would still keep adding one rose per year. I'll never know, but my 18 year old daughter still receives her pink roses every year and on the card I write "With love from your Daddy".

Valentine's Day is always special. My husband always spoils me and he has taught our boys to as well. This year will be very special because Valentine's is on a Saturday so we can spend a whole day of family love.

ReplyDeleteA couple of weeks ago I asked my 5 year old daycare child if she was ready for Valentines day. She said yeah, Rosanne had her house decorated. I retired from daycare about 6 months ago so I miss this part of the year. I went on to ask her what she decorated it with. She said I don't know some red papers. I kept questioning she to try to get her to say it was hearts and I finally asked what shapes they were. She said I don't know. I asked her if they were hearts, and she said of course Nancy, like the candy hearts we eat that you gave me last year, don't you know. I love the words out the mouths of young children.
ReplyDeleteFeb 14th, 1992 the college newspaper had a special page for Valentine messages from students. My boyfriend and I managed to each place a message without the other one knowing. When I walked into the student union the afternoon the paper came out everyone I saw asked if I'd seen it yet. When I opened the paper to see why everyone was so excited I found my boyfriend's message in the center of the Valentine page. Inside a large heart were the words "JJ will you marry me?"! We've been married 15 years but everytime I think of that newspaper I feel the thrill all over again.
ReplyDeleteMy husband passed away September 2007 and my Dad passed away November 2007. I have been blessed to live next door to my Mom and Dad since 2000, so last Valentine's Day it was difficult for my Mom and I, however, this year has started with a flood of memories. So I love remembering my mom's special valentine. Every Valentine's Day my Dad would bring home a Whitman's sampler box of candy. This year, I asked my Mom to share the story behind this gift, that, of course, us kids loved too. Mom explained that Dad could not always afford a gift (he worked three jobs while completing his college degree all while keeping 5 children and a wife housed, clothed, and fed), so the druggist at the drugstore where Dad and Mom got their prescriptions gave Dad a store charge account. This allowed Dad to purchase his little gift of candy each year. Even after Dad became a teacher and money was not so tight, he continued to purchase this same token of their love. This year Mom and I treated ourselves to a Whitman's sampler box of candy -- thanks Dad, we love you!!
ReplyDeleteLast year stands out as one of my best Valentines Day's. My husband is always looking at the things I create and commenting on how lovely they are and that he could never do that. Last year, before Valentines Day, when he had made that comment, I responded that anything he made would be beautiful if he made it from his heart. Well, when I was gone for the afternoon, he took the girls out to buy some converstation heart candies. They came home, cut out big hearts from cardstock, wrote little sayings on them, and decorated them with the candies. Then they hung them around the living room. It was truly the best gift I could ever receive!

ReplyDeleteSadly, Valentine's isn't a huge holiday for us now. My birthday is February 6th and my son's is February 11th (today), so by the 14th, we're partied out :) DH usually does the biggies for my birthday, so Valentine's Day is just small and (from me) homemade goodies of course.
Now my favorite part is making valentines with the boys. After we get back from the birthday celebration tonight, we're planning to get started. I think we're doing lollipop covers with "That's What Boys are Made of" and "Life's a Jungle" stamp sets. Love the lion and the hippo :)
My favorite memories of Valentine's Day are these years with my children. I love being at their parties and watching them exchange and then open their little packages. As a room mom, it is also fun to see the cards that different children chose-oh how they match their personalities:) Amy K.
ReplyDeleteOne of my fondest memeories of Valentine's Day is during my student teaching time. The first day of my student teaching at the first grade level was on Valentine's Day. The students had not known I was coming, but once I got there and they were upset that they had not known to make me a valentine. So, most of my first day student teaching was watching students that did not know me create beautiful Valentine's for me and then give me hugs as they presented them to me. I totally enjoyed that student teaching experience, and will always remember and love Valentine's Day because of this time.
ReplyDeleteThe best gift I ever received on Valentine's Day was from my then boyfriend (who is now my husband). It was my baptism into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (LDS). This Valentine's will mark 16 years! My purpose in life has changed ever since that special day. I also never thought I would have 4 beautiful children and a loving husband as a result of this gift!

My favorite memories of Valentine's Day was sharing in the excitement with my kids while they were growing up. Picking out the cards and getting ready for the big party. Now I'm fortunate that I can share in the excitement with my granddaughter.
ReplyDeleteAs a child, I looked forward to Valentine's Day because I received a card from my mom expressing her love for me and it was always signed, "Love, MOM XOXOXO." Now as a mom, I am reminded of her continuing love for me as I write similiar love notes to my children sign them, "Love MOM XOXOXO"
ReplyDeleteOne of my most memorable valentines was 13 years ago when I was pregnant with my son. I was stuck in a hospital bed for two months already (it was a difficult pregnancy), and my husband had a hard time coming to see me often as I was more than an hour and a half away. Anyway, he had already told me the previous week that he could not come on valentines to see me. Well, he did! And he brought purple roses - my favourite! - and a plate full of rice Krispie squares (which was my craving). He also brought pictures of the babies' room that he had finished decorating as a surprise for me! I remember being so happy and we had a wonderful day together playing euchre and just being silly in my hospital room. That is a valentines I will never forget!
ReplyDeleteI love Valentine's Day because I teach Grade One and they immerse themselves into this holiday. They are so excited to make cards for the special people in their lives. They are overjoyed to hand out those store-bought cards that they loving wrote their name on for each specail friend in their class. This year they were excited to be able to use some CTMH stamps to make their homemade cards even more special. I can't help smiling all day long on Valentine's Day because I have been blessed with such a great family and I get to spend this day surrounded by loving, pure hearts. What a joy!!!

My elementary school sold valentines for 50 cents the week or two prior to v-day. I was lucky enough to have wonderful friends who would send one to me and I loved how good it made me feel to receive them. In 6th grade i decided i wanted to make sure that all of my friends felt special too so I decided to buy each of them one. On the inside of the card I wrote silly little inside jokes to them and then told them how glad I was that they were my friend. On v-day when the cards were delivered to my friends they all were pleasantly surprised to get one.
ReplyDeleteThis Valentine Day preparation has been the best for me so far. My four and six year old daughters hand stamped their own valentines. My six year old asked my four year old to "pass the hollyhock and chocolate ink please". It's not just "pink and brown" to a close to my heart kid!
ReplyDeleteI, too, love Valentine's Day! Some of the best Valentines I've ever gotten have come from my 8 kids! Can you imagine the vast number of Valentines I've collected over the years as they made them in Sunday School and even in our home school? It's such a pleasure to receive Valentines and I wanted my kids to have that special touch, so now, I "pay it forward" by mailing them to my adult kids who are scattered all over the country! Even my 2 single, adult sons receive a Valentine card (hand made, of course) from their Mom, as well as my married daughters! Of course, I can't overlook the fact that in our nearly 30 years of marriage, my husband has never once forgotten to celebrate our love on Valentine's Day!

My favourite Valentine memories are of my grandfather. I was very close to him when I was a child. Sadly, he passed away at the young age of 59. My birthday is very close to Valentine's Day and my parties were always Valentine themed, and my grandpa was ALWAYS at my parties! He would have my friends laughing and having lots of fun with his crazy antics. And of course he never forgot that Valentine's Day was just around the corner so there was always a special gift for me that was Valentine related!
ReplyDeleteGrowing up, every Valentine's Day was always made extra special by my parents. We would always wake up to a special treat left by our breakfast plate- sometimes it would be a fun pair of holiday socks, an edible chocolate treat, or other heart-inspired knicknack. Now I continue that tradition with my own kids- I already have planned the placemats for them with heart candy Pez dispensers and a small toy surprise. They will be so excited!
ReplyDeleteOne of my favorite Valentine's Days was the day my son proposed to his wife! It was so exciting. She had been in a terrible car accident just a month or so before. He had gone with her parents to be with her while she was in the hospital.
ReplyDeleteOn this weekend, he and I drove 9 hours to where she was teaching and he surprised her with a rose. We then whisked her away for a trip home. Yes, the same day! The next day, Valentine's Day he had planned a "date" with both sets of parents and them. We went to our Union Station where there was a big fountain that you could step inside and there he proposed on bended knee! She was so surprised...and it was very exciting as parents to witness the event! We all cried! We then went out to dinner to celebrate! What a sweet memory.
My favourite valentine's are the simple letters I used to receive from my husband when we were in university together- we didn't have a lot of money for extras then but he would also take up a pen and write me something from his heart!! I have all these letters wrapped with a red ribbon and put away in a box (hmm- feel some inspiration for a scrapbook page here!). They are truly sweet and so much more cherished since he has not written a letter to me in a long time!!
ReplyDeletewell mine just happened yesterday as I recall where my heart just dropped. I am raising a grandson who is now 4. he has many special needs and is quite a handful. yesterday when he came home from preschool, he gave me a heart ring he made and a hat with hearts he cut out himself as they were attached by a stapler. he told me MOM.. (that's what he calls me) I love you so much, your the best mom, you make my heart happy. i made this for you. I wore it to dinner and the ring with pride when we went out to eat.

My favoeirw vaentine was a huge wall display my husbaband made me on our first valentines day as husband and wife. He painted it pink and made some cutouts in it and filled it with photos, roses, chocolate, and scented candles. It was beautiful and romantic mostly becasue i realized how much time he had spent on creating it just for me
ReplyDeleteMy favorite valentine was from my boyfriend several years ago. He sent an arrangement of flowers with a single rose to my work. No one knew I had been seeing anyone, and for him to want to make his feelings known was a HUGE step. He's so not a candy & flowers kind of guy, so this was way out of his comfort zone! I was so impressed I just had to marry him!
ReplyDeleteMy mom has always given us a special valentines present and now it has carried over to my children. Even I get excited when I see the package arrive in the mail approaching valentines. It's not usually very much but it is so sweet that she always remembers us.

ReplyDeleteMy Grandfathers Birthday is on Feb. 14th. So my memories are always of the extra love my Grandmother gave him on his special day! They have both since passed away, but I still want to be just like them every day of the year.

They tell their friends that "Valentines Day is no big deal!", but I know they look forward to the little things that I do each year! Love those special memories!

ReplyDeleteMy favorite Valentine's memory was when my husband and I were dating. We lived in separate states at the time and I missed him horribly during the week. At the end of every weekend he would kiss my forehead to kiss all my worries away.
ReplyDeleteFor Valentine's Day he made me this adorable "forehead kisser" It had a cute picture of him with bright red lips that could slide out from the wood so he could kiss my forehwad during the week when I missed him most. It was adorable and always made me laugh.
He was in graduate school and didn't have much money back then so I was so touched that he had made this beautiful and funny gift for me. We've been married 12 years and it's still my favorite gift from him.
My favorite valentine was finding out that I was having a girl! I am now the proud mother of a beautiful 8 month old daughter and I found out that I was having a girl on Valentine's Day!

ReplyDeleteI have a new favorite Valentine memory as of last night & making a new one tonight...My 14 1/2 year old son saw me looking thru stamping blogs and said "oh yeah, I guess I need to do that", make a homemade card for his "girlfriend" is what he was referring to. So he's going shopping for candies to wrap up in some fun container I have in my stamping/scrapping room after school and he and I will be sitting side by side making homemade cards tonight. A memory I can't wait to have tomorrow!

ReplyDeleteMy favorite memory is that my mom and dad used to always wake us up with heart shaped pink pancakes. it was the only morning of the year that we sat down to an actual family breakfast on a school day! I'm not sure what started the tradition but pink pancakes were a hit in my house!
ReplyDeleteevery valentines day that i can remember when i lived at home with my parents, even when i was in high school, my mom would wake up early and place a little gift at the spot at the kitchen table where we ate breakfast. it was always the most random, cheesey, and sometimes downright strange things ever. one year a very odd looking stuffed frog with big red lips whose tummy said "kiss me". another year a cute stationary set which had pens that had hearts on top that lit up when you put pressure from writing on the tip and a ton of fuzzies that left a trail wherever i used the pens.
ReplyDeletewell when i went away to college i must say i was feeling a little nostalgic and thought that my days of crazy random valentines gifts were over. i was wrong! shipped to my dorm room were the random gifts i had grown to love. this time was red grapefruit sized love devil thing... not sure what it was but it was attached to an elestic string and when you bounced it on the sting it made a very loud cartoon-ish boing sound. my roommate thought my mother was crazy but it put a huge smile on my face.
Valentine's day is special in our family too...I usually make the family a special dinner and my husband always get his "girls" (me and my daughters 7&9)chocolate covered strawberries and roses. It's a once a year special treat we all look forward to.
ReplyDeleteI have one very special Valentine memory. We have always tried to do something special for Valentines Day and as newlywed college students, we didn't have much money for anything romantic. Our first Valentines as newleyweds has got to be my favorite. We lived in my in-laws camper our first year of marriage. I bought a balloon boquet,candles and lots of rose petals and threw them all over our tiny new home. My husband surprised me by bringing home BEAUTIFUL carnations and roses along with a bottle of wine and my favorite chocolates: Turtles. We dined on cheap takeout in our little romantic candle lit camper. It was perfect! =) Thanks for letting me reminisce as we celebrate our 4th Valentine's Day as a married couple!

My favorite memory was the addressing of the valentine cards my mom bought from the grocery store the night before. Back then we also brought shoe boxes (or something of the sort) to school and worked on decorating them during art class. Who would've thought that 25 years later, my valentine box would be CTMH's Memory Keeper Box and my grocery store valentines would be handmade with love :0)

We are getting ready to celebrate his first birthday tomorrow and I am so excited!! Valentines day is one of my favorite holidays and now it is just that much more special.
ReplyDeleteOne of my most memorable Valentine's was when I was in the 5th grade. We got to make our own Valentine's Day boxes at home. My Dad decided to help me make mine this time. He built me a house out of wood. It was bright red with a black roof, and the top of the roof opened up so that I could access my valentines. We glued a heart doily to the top to decorate it, and then painted my name in the bright red paint on the roof. The kids in my class we envious of my special "box". But the best part of making it was spending time with my Dad pounding the nails, and painting the house. The house no longer exists, my two younger sisters took it over as a doll house, but the memories I have of it do.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite valentine was from a friend when I was in high school(many,many years ago). We had been friends from church all our lives and then her family moved and we were at the same HS. She made it from construction paper and a doily. We didn't have the sayings BFF back in those days, but the sentiment was the same. We still exchange Christmas cards every year. It's wonderful to look back on your early years and remember old friends you haven't seen for ages.

ReplyDeleteThis is one of the holidays that I "love" getting in to! I love hearts and sign my name with a heart over it. I remember a special Valentine's Day of making cards with my wonderful son, then heart-shaped cookies and way too many sprinkles and decorations, then on to a special dinner with heart-shaped steaks, heart-tomatoes in the salad, chocolate heart dessert and anything else heart-shaped that we could think of. They grow so fast, we enjoy including him in our Valentine's dinner (dining in or out), whenever we can. (We have our own couple dinner too!)Love & more love!<3
ReplyDeleteMy favorite Valentines memories are when we got a shoe box and mom would get out the stack of construction paper, heart doilies,glitter,glue and scissors and it was up to us to decorate how we wanted. But the best part was when you couldn't wait to get home from school to see who gave you the "secret" valentine.

ReplyDeleteMy favorite "romantic memory" was in our first year of marriage, he was in the Navy and out to sea....I worked for our apartment complex as the assistant manager. One day (my day off) the manager called me and said she has something over in the office that belonged to me, but she wasn't sure she wanted to give it to me, lol... So I went over there and there was a dozen red roses ordered all the way from Japan....Of course they weren't delivered from Japan. But my hubby was in Japan at the time and ordered them from a local flower shop...It was before the sailors had access to the internet...
ReplyDeleteMy favourite valentine moment happened over 35 years ago. I had been away for two weeks on a vacation with one of my friends. When I returned home my husband (at the time my fiancé) had tied ribbons and paper hearts on the big tree in the front yard. Inside every cupboard and drawer in the house was a valentine note about how much I meant to him and how much he loved me and missed me. Each one was signed the same way. We celebrated our 34th wedding anniversary this year and we still leave notes for each other. The notes over the years have changed - some have been about mundane life events such as who is going to pick up the kids from music lessons, or a thank you for washing my car but everyone is signed the same - As Always... Love Forever. Every day can be Valentine's Day when you choose to celebrate the spirit of love forever - the spirit of the valentine.
ReplyDeleteBrandon and I started dating in January so when Valentine's Day came around we weren't sure how to celebrate it. So we did the standard dinner a movie. But when we were driving to the movies he took a different road. I asked him where were going and he said that he wanted me to see what the most beautiful thing in the world was. So he drove me to a marsh (were very outdoorsy) and we layed on the dyke while we watched the sunset and the ducks and geese fly by. When it was time to leave I told him thank you for showing me the most beautiful thing ever and he let go of my hands and took a few steps back and said "no you here right now is the most beautiful thing ever". Now we have a beautiful daughter together and are very happy and in love!

Valentines Day is alway special for me. It is my gpa's (on my mom's side) birthday :) He has since passed on but the day still reminds me of him. He was a sweet man who LOVED red-heads!!! He had piercing blue eyes which my oldest has inherited. Two of my girls have those blue eyes and of course, red hair!!
ReplyDeleteWe always celebrated his bday with a made-from-scratch red velvet cake and lasagna. His two favorite things! To this day, the receipe is at my house (given to me by my mom) and its written in my Great-Grandma's handwriting (his mom). I love it so much :) I keep it in a plastic baggie so it doesn't get ruined.
Valentines Day is a day of hearts and love. To me, I remember my dear sweet Gpa Calvin. Tomorrow we will be eating lasagna and red velvet cake in his honor as we do every year.

My favorite memory is a valentine card that my husband designed, drew and colored for me. He even wrote a very special verse inside. He left it on the steering wheel of my car (I was at work) but then dinner, roses, and chocolate came later.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite valentine's day was last year, when I got together with a few ladies at church and we made valentine cards for the shut-ins. We had a blast creating designs, making them and delivering them. Those valetine's are still being talked about a year later. It really was not the valentine that was so special, but sharing of time with the shut-ins.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite valentine, was a valentine person I made in first grade. The whole person was made of hearts, from the head and facial features all the way to the feet. My valentine person was so sweet and cute in pink and red. I always think about it as Valentine's Day approaches.

Every year my mom would have a special dinner with special plates and would gift us a small gift and a card telling us how much she loved us. I loved this tradition and would like to carry it on with my boys as they grow up.

ReplyDelete:) I had gained a nasty amount of weight and we had just found out my brother was leaving for an 18 month tour in Iraq and I was sad! Well, anyway my hubby was very regular acting the whole morning, like any other day. At 12:30 pm (after lunch), I had bundled up my 3 older children to take my oldest to pre~school, waddled out to the suburban and on the steering wheel was a bouquet of flowers (the kind from the grocery store~under instruction to never pay $50 for flowers), the movie 'Notebook', my favorite book at the time and a LOVE letter of my own...bringing me to tears and making me feel like that young, non~pregnant skinny wife from our first years together without erasing all the 'mom' joys from the last 9 years. :) I should scrap that letter. I have it put in a special place with all my important papers. Coming 4 years into the future....we have now been together for almost 13 years (april). He is out of town this year coaching basketball, but texts me every hour to see if my gift has come yet...it hasn't come as of this moment...but as excited as he is about it, I am really curious...we still have the same no $50.00 flowers!! I would rather buy CTMH product! lol! Happy Valentine's Day... I love, love month! :) (*fyi...my brother is home safe after 2 tours! went again in 2007-08)
I remember getting a valentine from my dad that will always stand out in my mind. We were overseas in Berlin just after the Wall came down and he was "in the field" as we called it- training. Desert Storm had just started. My 4 siblings and I got our cards in the mail in one package. They were all the same- a card with 2 red hearts. The only writing was my dad's. He didn't say anything spectacular. He just reminded us to be good for our mom and to help each other. I remember for my baby brother it said for my mom to give it to him so he could make a mess of it while eating. The funny part is that we were eating lunch when we opened the cards so my little brother did just that. That card was destroyed in under five minutes but he sure enjoyed it! I remember this particular event because my dad normally didn't/couldn't contact us when he was in training. It was really neat to get something from him the mail! I think I kept that card for a while, but seeing as it's been so long ago and several moves later, it's long gone- just not the memory!
ReplyDeleteMy husband of 16 years has not one romantic bone in his body, however...he is the best gift giver ever. For a little background information, you have to know he calls Valentine's Day "Thr Hallmark Holiday". This morning I woke up to a Tasty Cake (snack cake company famous in our area, similar but not the same as Hostess) coconut cream pie. This is my all time favorite indulgent treat. To top it off there was a note that read "Happy Hallmark Day" with a red heat stamped from the All My Love Set. He really does love me!!!!!!

ReplyDeleteNow that my daughter is in school, we had fun making her valentines for her classmates - she was just so excited to make cards with Mommy. I also loved getting her valentine to me that she made in school. I will save it forever!!
This Valentines will mark the 18th for hubby and I. Several years ago we were so broke he couldn't afford to give me anything for Valentines, payday was the 15th that year. So on the 15th he came home with a heart shaped box of candy and flowers from his favorite road side stand. I joked that he just waited until the 15th so everything would be half priced! It has become our tradition to celebrate on the 15th each year (and yes the chocolates usually go on sale that day! LOL)

My favorite valentine was the one my husband drew and even wrote a short sweet personal message on the inside. He left it on the steering wheel of my car while I was at work!! He did this often. That night we went out to eat and I got roses and chocolate.

I remember growing up and going to school on Valentine's day was always such a drag. I always wanted to stay home and watch Valetine specials on TV and make cards (imagine that!). Every year we had school on V-day, my mom would pack our lunches FULL of valentines and little candies. It was so fun! It made it not so dreadful to go to school:)
ReplyDeleteso my boyfriend and i were having a discussion about valentines day a few weeks ago and i kept telling him i didnt want him to get me anything. he kept saying that i was doing "the girl thing" where i say dont get me anything but i really want flowers or something. i tried telling him a thousand times i wasnt doing "the girl thing" but he wasnt convinced. finally i got him to believe me when i explained that i know he loves me, and he knows i love him and that i like showing him i love him every day all year and he shows me too so i dont need a day where he feels obligated to express his love. then the conversation turned more specifically to flowers, i told him i would love flowers on a day where he is feeling soooo in love with me but not valentines day when he thinks its what he should do just because. so 2 weeks ago i get a delivery, thinking to myself "yay my ctmh order is here! woo hoo" so i answer the door and its 2 dozen roses delivered with a card saying he loves me and wanted me to smile. awww cute right?! so i think to myself ok he finally understood i dont need any hoopla on v-day. nope another 2 dozen roses were delivered today, on v-day, with the card saying that cupid didnt tell him to send them ;) he is so sweet.

ReplyDeleteI remember Valentine's Day as the one special day in the school year where EVERYBODY is a friend. You got a valentine from everyone in the class and for that one day, we were all equal. There was no girls againist boys or this group vs. that group, you got a greeting in the valentine from everyone in the class. We got to sit back, laugh, talk to each other and eat a little bit of candy. It was a relaxing, happy time, that afternoon of Valentine's Day.
ReplyDeleteMy special memories of Valentines are from my childhood. I remember taking a lace doily, cutting out a heart to cglue on the doily, writing Happy Valentines Day on the paper. I would then glue it all together and attach a lollipop. My mom was really big on home made products, and it seemed like I made these every year. I even did these for my kids when they were in in kindergarten.
ReplyDeleteValentine's Day is bitter sweet to me each year because it was my mother's birthday. She died of cancer when I was 17 years old. I always thought it was neat that her birthday was on Valentine's day when I was growing up. I am sure that I would never forget her birthday no matter what the day but I always think of her on Valentine's Day. I am a mother to 3 and grandmother to 5 myself now. I try to make each and every day special to all of my family because each day is very precious when you loose your mother at a young age. Bonnie
ReplyDeleteMy favorite Valentine's Day memories actually are from my adult life. As an elementary school teacher, my favorite memory is of watching and helping my students create their valentine boxes. Every year each student covers a cereal box with construction paper and decorates it with stencils, stickers, and stamps. Each box is always so unique and the children are so happy when they are finished. It is even more special to see them filled with treats on Valentine's Day!

I have always loved Valentine's Day! It's just another opportunity to let you loved ones know just how much you really love them. My dad always made this day special for me and my sister. As little girls, he would buy each of us flowers on Valentine's Day (along with our mom, of course)! He always made us feel special... and now my husband has that job and is amazing at it! :)

Having 3 kids has brought back the magic of Valentines for me. We celebrated this year with 3 school parties. A preschool party, a 3rd grade party and a 4th grade party. It was so much fun seeing the excitement on my kids faces as they handed out the valentines they had for their friends. I was so proud of them. It wasn't about what they were getting...it was about what who they were giving to. My husband and I don't normally celebrate Valentines Day aside from a card and an I Love You. This year, after the wonderful day spent with each child and their party, I came home to a beautiful bouquet of flowers from my honey! It was a year to remember. ReplyDeleteI love Valentine's Day because it is my anniversary as well. Having the two together helps me remember how loved and special I am to my husband as well as how much I love and appreciate him. I also love sharing this day with our daughter (age 2) and helping her feel our love for each other as well as for her!

I love Valentine's Day more now that I have kids because I love give them each a little gift and tell them how much I love them all day long. Love Day is a really nice day in our house.
ReplyDeletethis year my dear sweetheart sent me dozens of flowers and a huge teddy bear that he'd taken a picture of and sent to my phone so I could have them with me always.
ReplyDeleteI love Valentine's Day! I don't really have a favorite one that stands out, but I love searching for new recipes for all things pink or red and love making a special meal for my family along with hand stamped cards and gifts.
ReplyDeleteEvery year with my kids gets better! This year, my daughter, Loren(3) kept saying "Happy New Year!" with great pride thinking she was saying it right! It was a crack-up. My son Jared didn't understand why I thought it was so funny...gotta love them!
ReplyDeleteI would have to say my favorite Valentine's memory would have to be the day my daughter was born...OK so she techinally was born on the 13th, but I was still in the hospital on the 14th. So, that holds a special place in my heart.
ReplyDeleteMy Mom started the tradition of giving each child 1 inexpensive gift - specially wrapped in white tissue paper and topped with a couple of foil-wrapped chocolate hearts!
ReplyDeleteWe have continued the tradition with our 5 kids, and I will always remember the first time I was surprised to receive my own gift from them!
This year, Valentine's day was pretty great actually! My husband & I had just returned from a wonderful trip to Nicaragua. For Valentine's day he gave me a book with a bunch of the special pictures we took there. He personalized the first & last pictures. The first one was of the "secret" beach we found & he had added the words, "To my girl, love Phil. Nicaragua Lovers." The last one was a picture of the final beach sunset we shared & it said, "The End, until next time..." He also gave me this great necklace we had seen there that I really wanted. Basically, my husband rocks!
ReplyDeleteOne of my best memories of valentines day came from a year when I was single. I worked at Best Buy at the time, I was about 17 I think, and a guy who worked with me was asking me about my plans etc. I informed him I didnt have anyone that I was dating and it wasn't a big holiday for my family so I wasn't doing anything. Apparently he did not think it was ok for me to have an uneventful valentines day so on his break he went out and got flowers and chocolates and came back to work. I hadn't known he went to all of that trouble and kept on working. Then over the intercom I hear a page for me to come to the customer service desk. I assumed it was to talk to a customer who was unhappy about their home theater purchase since thats one of the only reasons sales people get paged to the front. I walk to the front and there he was and he even had made a poster board sign that said will you be my valentine on it. How cute! I felt so special and will always remember him for that. We have since fallin out of touch with one another but he remains one of my best memories.
ReplyDeleteThis year for valentines I spent in the hospital with my 11 year old daughter who severely broke her leg on ... Friday the 13th!!! She ended up in Surgery on Valentines day to put plates and screws in. Talk about a memorable day!
