Christmas, Once Again

I’ve heard children who exclaim that they wish Christmas could come every day—I was probably one of those children once! Kids love the presents, the food, the games and parties, and of course, the anticipation of Santa’s arrival.

Now that Christmas day is here and I’m all grown up, too, I’m grateful that Christmas only comes once per year--because if it were everyday, we might take for granted the generosity of our friends. We might become accustomed to the tender cards from loved ones, or the gleefulness of children. We might see joy and peace as expectations rather than as sweet, sweet blessings.

But because Christmas comes but once a year, it provides a welcome contrast to the other 364 days of the year. It yanks us from work and bills and to-do lists and gently drops a carol in our heads and a prayer in our hearts. The season doesn’t last long, and that’s what makes it precious.

Today, I hope you’re savoring your blessings. I hope you enjoy a sweet reprieve from the everyday. I hope you find peace in your beliefs and happiness surrounded by those who mean more to you than anything else on earth. That’s what I plan to do—because Christmas is finally here, once again.
