It’s the Simple Things!

This Valentine’s Day was a really fun one for the Lyntons, even though—or perhaps ESPECIALLY BECAUSE—I kept things simple. In years past, I always bake up a batch of signature sugar cookies to decorate with the grandkids. This year, my hectic schedule didn’t allow much kitchen time, so I simplified: I grabbed a box of basic cupcakes at Costco and a few simple treats for adornment. The kids were just as happy as ever and look at the result! They’re darling (and tasty).

On Saturday evening, David and I went to a favorite restaurant that’s completely devoid of loud music, too-close tables, and boisterous conversations (WHY do so many restaurants feel more like a wild circus than fine dining these days?). It was a real highlight of the holiday because we sat in the low light and quiet and enjoyed a rare chance to talk, about everything or nothing at all. What a wonderful and cozy feeling, to spend an evening enjoying the simplicity of genuine conversation, good food, and relaxed company.

I love holidays like this one. It seems the calendar punctuates our lives with regular, needed breaks… holidays give us a pause to celebrate, a moment to give thanks, a respite to love and be loved. And these things, the simple things, are the best treat we can hope for—that and a festive cupcake now and then, right? Hope your Valentine’s Day was spent with those you love, too!

  2. My husband, 18 month old and I were all sick on Valentines. But it was so nice to stay home and watch some fun movies and play with blocks and trucks without any interruptions. Next year I want to do that again, but without the sickness part.
