This Sunday is Mother’s Day. I know that for many women, it’s a day of burned pancakes served in bed, sticky-fingered hugs, and handmade cards bursting with love. For others, it’s a time of longing to be a mother, or even sadness that such an opportunity hasn’t come yet. For many, it’s a time of remembrance, fond memories of little children now grown. I hope that no matter your age, your stage, or your situation, you find a measure of peace and delight in your role this Sunday—there is reason to be grateful, always!
As for me, I’ll spend the day enjoying my family, which happily straddles many different stages, from teenagers at home to newborn grandbabies to grown-up children who live far away. How I love them all!
My heart is also full for my own mother, who has given my life lasting purpose and direction. This particular Mother’s Day, I find myself reflecting on the amazing, sweet childhood my mother provided me. One incident in particular comes to mind. I loved to play with dolls and Barbie was all the rage. Oh, how I wanted one! I was over the moon when I received a Barbie doll as a gift, and I couldn’t wait to start accessorizing her (yes, even then, I was all about embellishments!). I’m not sure whether it was because we had a lack of money or whether Barbie back then had a lack of wardrobe options, but I remember that I had only one outfit for my Barbie—the one she came with.
I’ll never forget the day my mother hauled out her sewing machine and began pulling together scraps of fabric left over from a variety of other projects. She sewed those tiny hems and miniscule collars with a zeal and talent I’ll never forget, until my Barbie was runway ready. It was pretty amazing; the designers at the toy company could learn a thing or two from my mom. I had hours, days, weeks, years of delight playing with Barbie and dressing her up for every occasion. To this day, I’ve saved Barbie and my mother’s handmade doll wardrobe. Even bringing them out to have a look reminds me of her dedication, selfless service, and spot-on attunement to her daughter’s heartfelt wishes. She really knows what it means to be a mom.
I’m so grateful to her and grateful to be a mother (and now a nana) myself. I hope your day is similarly spent—with gratitude felt by you and shown to you for all you do!

I'm so impressed that you have these precious childhood possessions. I too loved Barbie and my mini sewing machine and all the outfits I created for her (though not as impeccable as your mother's designs). I wish I still had them to share with my daughters.
ReplyDeleteYou are a fantastic writer.
This brings back such memories of my own childhood and my love of Barbies and the clothes my mom and grandma made for her. Yes, she was one well dressed doll! Tomorrow, when I celebrate Mother's Day with my mom, I am going to thank her for the time she spent creating wonderful childhood memories for me. Thank you for the reminder - and Happy Mother's Day!
ReplyDeleteThank you for the lovely post!! I can't believe that you still have those clothes and Barbie!! Your mom did a great job!!!! Happy Mother's Day!
ReplyDeleteI wish I had saved my Barbie and the clothes my mother had made her. My mom would sew by day for Barbie, knit at night for her. She was one lucky doll and as for me, I was/am the luckiest!
ReplyDeleteDear Jeanette,
ReplyDeleteThank you for the reminder of the memories of my childhood and my Barbie. I had a grandmother that had very little money but could create anything. She made me wonderful Barbie doll clothes, stitched with love. I still have all of the special clothes. She even knitted a sweater for Barbie that included tiny little Mother of Pearl buttons. My mother has always told me that I am just like my grandmother when it comes to creating things. I guess that is why I love CTMH so much - you give us beautiful paper, stamps, etc. to create with!
Have a wonderful Mothers Day.
stamping hugs,
Joyce
Wow, that is an awesome posting!
ReplyDeleteTalking about Barbie and your childhood brings back such great memories of my childhood.
I love that you have kept your barbie and clothes!
Have a great Mother's Day!
Well said, Jeanette - just one look at these beautiful creations for your Barbie and I can feel the love your Mom poured into them! Thank you for sharing your love of family - you are an inspiration for us all.
ReplyDeleteHappy Mother's Day!
Jeanette,
ReplyDeleteThanks for bringing back memories of Barbie and handmade Barbie clothes. I still have mine also. Hope you had a wonderful Mother's Day. See you in July!

WOW - Mother's Day reminds us of the wonderful memories each of us has and your Mother's Day blog article reminded me how much influence mother's have on their children/grandchildren. My mother wasn't a sewer, but we knew she loved us 5 children very much!!! And amazinngly - I took up sewing and made very cute outfits for each of my children. And I love making things with my hands. You have great memories of your mother's sewing Barbie clothes and those are wonderful memories you'll treasure all your life.
ReplyDeleteWOW what an awesome memory and collection to treasure! Thanks for sharing this with us.
ReplyDeleteJeanette,
ReplyDeleteYou brought back great memories talking about your Barbie dolls and the wonderful things your Mother did. My Mother was just like that! She would stay up until late at night sewing barbie clothes for me. And accessories...well, did you ever use the colored head sewing pins for barbies earrings? I had them in all colors to match the outfits. What fun!
I don't think I'll ever be too old to appreciate Barbie. All I have left is some incredibly tiny buttons (1/8 inch) that my Mom used to sew on Barbie Clothes.
ReplyDeleteWhy! Oh why didn't I save it all!?!
My aunt would send me handmade Barbie clothes for Christmas each year. My mom knitted sweaters for Barbie and Ken. I still have all of my Barbies and clothes. This reminded me. I need to get them out and take a look. Such wonderful memories! I've always love handmade stuff.
ReplyDeleteLoved your blog! It brought back memories of the clothes that my mom made for my sister and I. We cherish them now, but at the time, we wanted " store bought"! How silly when we think of it now. I smile at your photograph because the fabric is sooooo much like the ones I had oh and knitted ones too.
