Hooray! It’s almost time for my favorite holiday of the year: Independence Day! I’m already planning to wave my flag, gather my family, and attend patriotic services to commemorate the past, present, and future of this great land. In anticipation, I’m already playing with patriotic color combinations and ideas, and today’s is a twist on classic red, white and blue—it’s Cranberry, Indian Corn Blue, Outdoor Denim, with a hint of Crème Brulee for fun.
In addition to my stamped cards dressed up with my favorite basics: buttons, stitching and grosgrain ribbon, I’ve also added some Dimensional Elements. The “Freedom” card, I’ve stamped tone-on-tone in Crème Brulee on cardstock, then trimmed and mounted it to a DE star. Our DE stars collection has a lot of different star shapes and sizes to choose from, so it’s a great, affordable way to dress up your summer-themed artwork.
But the piece I’m most excited about is this great “Stars and Stripes” tic-tac-toe travel game. Believe it or not, it’s made from our My Creations Board Book.
To make it, use a cutting knife to cut a square out of the inside of each page of the book (don’t cut the covers). Then, glue together the pages, which will give your project a “box within a book.” Cover the inside of the box decoratively, then use scraps from the cut chipboard to make your stars and stripes game pieces. Secure the book with a photo hanger-and-ribbon closure, and the game pieces will stay snugly inside, even when you travel. On my game, I’ve even added some fun facts about our flag so when the grandkids play the game, they can learn a little American history, too!

oh, I am SO copying that tic-tac-toe game idea! And unlike most board games, when (NOT if) my kids lose the pieces, we just make more!
