Weeks of Wonder: Embossing is the boss!

I love the beauty and “wow” factor of embossing. It’s great no  matter how or where it’s used to give a little extra dimension and shine to any project. Today’s technique combines the wow of embossing with a favorite stamping technique, “Rock and Roll.” Here’s  how you can achieve the same great look you see on all the Pansy Purple images shown in today’s featured artwork.

Step 1: First, stamp the base image in third generation ink (stamp a first generation—full strength image—and then a second generation on scrap paper and set aside.)

Step 2: Stamp the “shade image” over the base image in second  generation. Our idea book includes several stamp sets ideal for “base and shade stamping,” which allows for great layered looks. When you’re working with base and shade looks, start first with the lightest “generation,” then add darker images on top.

Step 3: Using your craft heater, heat set the stamped image to ensure the ink is dry and to prevent embossing powder from sticking.

Step 4: Using the “shade image,”  you’ll “rock and roll” the edges of the image in Versamark ink. The rock and roll technique means you circle the edge of a stamp image by tilting the block its on so that the edges just barely get covered in ink. The center of  the stamp should stay clean. This can be a little tricky to do with Versamark ink, since it’s clear—so be patient and thorough. The  results are worth it!

Step 5: Stamp Versamark image directly over Pansy Purple stamped image. While Versamark ink is wet, sprinkle the image with Pansy Purple embossing powder. Tap off the excess.

Step 6: Set the powder with your craft heater. This takes just a few minutes and you’ll know when it’s done because your shade image will be embossed to a beautiful shine with great color.

If you’d like to have some fun trying this technique at home, here a re some of the stamp sets used in today’s project—each one featuring images that are ideal for rock and roll, base and shade, and of course, becoming the boss with embossing: Rosy Regards (B1369) , Take a Picture (C1440), Damask Tiles (C134 2). Enjoy!

  5. Thank you! I can't wait to try this technique. Embossing is one of my favorites but I had never thought about using it in this way.

Thanks also for the suggestions of good stamps sets to use.

  7. I know this is a bit off-topic, but does CTMH have motorcycle stamps?? (current or retired?) I am a consultant and a new customer of mine enquired. I have only been a consultant for 2 years so I thought I would ask the expert!

  9. Love this idea! Thanks sharing it with us! Wish I would've seen this sooner to use with the Wings classes I had Monday & Tues night.

I do have a question/suggestion on our embossing powders... Can or will we be bringing out more, if not all of our colors in embossing powders? I have quite a few of the current ones. But with this technique you've shown and the Wings class I did, it would've been wonderful to have the Vineyard Berry color available to do this technique with my customers. I already had my pages made up for class with my sis-in-laws wedding pictures on there.

I'm very excited to say that I had a few new girls to CTMH at my Tues class and one of them loved the whole WOTG idea and the dimensional roses I made using Rosy Regards. I made the base rose and then did it again and cut a center of the rose out and pop-dotted it. It was cute because she asked me what color did you use for that pinkish color on there, I was confused at first and then figured out what she was asking and was able to show her 2nd generational stamping with that stamp set and she ended up ordering a WOTG kit & the Rosy Regards stamp set with our marvelous stamp price special this month, yea!!

I love this company & our products!!

  10. Here are the answers to some of your questions:

The little box was made from a template modified by our art studio and found online. The blog isn’t well suited to posting templates or PDFs, but there are many box and purse templates available online.

We don’t have any motorcycle stamps at this time. We will mark your comment as a suggestion.

We LOVE embossing as well, but only a handful of embossing powders are manufactured that coordinate with our existing color palette. We do use “off colors” as we need to in order to provide a good selection, but the embossing powders don’t sell in a high enough quantity for us to custom manufacture colors, so we choose to only focus on a limited color selection of those that are most popular.

    Thanks!
