As I mentioned yesterday, this year I’m dedicating my blog to spotlighting fabulous art created by artists in the Close To My Heart Art Studio as well as all you talented readers of my blog. If you want to participate and submit your artwork for inclusion here, you’ll want to refer to yesterday’s post. Here is the first Spotlight On Art for 2012, from our own studio:
The spray pen is the star in today’s artwork. Create the background diamond pattern using a Cricut shape as a mask, spraying Heavenly Blue re-inker on Heavenly Blue cardstock for a nice tone-on-tone look (genius, right?). For this piece, the artist cut the pennant card base at 1 1/4”. By pushing the “auto fill” function key when cutting the shapes, your Cricut will space everything out evenly and give you the perfect template for spraying your own pattern.
Here's a twist on the same technique: Instead of using the butterfly shapes as masks to pattern the entire page, the designer selectively added the pattern where she wanted it, leaving space to add a title where the pattern wouldn’t detract. It’s a great effect, isn’t it?
And here are those butterflies again, but now with some of the cut shapes added in for dimension and a fun way of extending the pattern outside of the sprayed area. I’m sure that you’ll agree that the final product is just beautiful.
This is such a fun technique because it allows you to use any number of masks to use and coordinate to any project you are working on. You can spray completely tone-on-tone or use accent colors to create your own patterned paper. Fresh, fun, and fabulous—can't wait to see what's in the spotlight next week!

ReplyDeleteGreat Idea! Love the effect! I use my cricut quite often, but never thought of using the "auto fill" function key as I use Design Studio. I'm going to try this technique. I'm getting really excited at trying somethning new. Yippee!

ReplyDeleteI noticed the "pattern" the auto-fill made when I was cutting out pieces for a create & take. I thought...hmmm...need to KEEP that as a mask! Brilliant idea to use the spray pen. I was thinking sponging. The spray pen gives a much softer, airier look.
