Fun Effects with Photo Layers

Lots of fun ideas and artwork come out of the Art Studio on a regular basis. The spotlight artwork that I’m posting today is a wonderful example of the kind of creativity that goes on in there. Take a look:

The artist really wanted to add a little something extra to her photo, so she printed two versions: one in color, and one in black and white. She trimmed the color photo down to emphasize her photo subject, cut a mat out of cardstock and then layered the three. The black and white image behind provides a nice sense of depth and continuity, while also helping the bold colors from the photo stand out all the more. Look at how she uses this same technique in the card below:

In this card, she’s taken a slice of the picture that goes all the way to the edges of the photo. You can use this technique to highlight as much, or as little of a picture as you want, depending on what delightful details you want to call attention to.

In this final example, our artist created a custom Polaroid using a different size of photo mat. I love how she’s layered it using one of our binder clips, lending a great, casual feel to this graduation card. It’s such a simple idea, easy to execute, that really adds a lot to the artwork. I’m so grateful for the fabulous studio artists who are so inventive in their artwork!

  7. GREAT ideas! I've done the layered color over black & white, but I've always done them as fussy cutouts! Can't wait to try these!
