My Secret Treat

Sometimes I feel like my life isn't very interesting—but my friends and co-workers are always encouraging me to write more blog posts, even if that means sharing tidbits from my (rather ordinary) life. So I thought that over the next few posts, I'd share a few insights with you into my personality and perhaps let you in on a few "Things about Jeanette You Never Knew." Here goes!

As many of you know, I have lost weight over the past year or so. It has been life-changing and rejuvenating and I feel like a new person. People who haven't seen me in some time say I look like a new person, too, and I've been asked dozens of times for my secret. Well, I won't be an evangelist for any one specific diet, because I know that different things work for different people. For me, it really was about portion size and just being sensible. And as I began to see progress, that provided the best momentum to keep going—success begets success!

I love green smoothies (I'll post some recipes of my favorites soon), raw fruits and veggies, and I've always been a fan of salmon. But in case you think I'm a healthy-food-only gal, I'll let you in on my favorite treat. This little indulgence is something I enjoy several times a week—it's silly, it's filling, and just one is a "meal"! And yes, for me, part of the secret of staying in balance is allowing myself a little decadence. I haven't gained an ounce back, and I do believe that allowing myself a treat here and there is part of the reason. It's all about moderation.

My secret? I absolutely love jumbo marshmallows. Do you know which ones I'm talking about? They're nearly as big as your fist and you have to eat them in several bites, like an apple. I bite the top off of one, then I roll it in Guittard chocolate chips. And repeat. And repeat. Yes, I "double dip" because the chocolate is all mine! And once the one jumbo marshmallow is done, so am I. Just one and done! What's your favorite sweet indulgence?

  1. THose Jumbo Marhsmallows are my kids FAVORITE, too, Jeanette! My "gotta have" treat is hands down, ALMOND M&M's. I wish I had the will power to stop after just a few!

  2. This post made me giggle. Oh boy. I used to take a spoon and dip it into the peanut butter jar. Just one dip, but it would be very satisfying. If I was wanting my favorite chocolate/peanut butter combination, and desperate enough (LOL), I would add chocolate chips to my peanut butter. Yum-O! Now, here's the funny part: One day, about 6 years back, my brother-in-law was telling us about catching his pre-teen daughter eating peanut butter out of the jar and how "gross" it was. After a pause, with a serious face, I said "What's wrong with that?" Teehee.

Congrats on your weight loss and keeping it off, Ms. Lynton. :)

  3. Yum! Have you tried the marshmallows frozen...so yummy?

I too am on a journey of weight loss, I have only lost 20 pounds, but definately feel better and more energized. It feels great to have loose clothing! I too believe in moderation and not completely giving up all those tasty goodies I so enjoy, just don't eat them as frequently or as many in one setting. I use to be an all or nothing type of person...but now "a little" is okay.

My indulgence maybe once or twice a year is cheese cake.

    Great job, keep it up!

  5. Hmmmm, fist sized marshmallows...can't say I've seen those in our local stores here in B.C. I will sure be looking for some, but in the meantime may try stuffing a few I have in the freezer.
My favourite "healthy" indulgence is frozen grapes. Otherwise, I reach for something salty rather than sweet. A Canadian exclusive, Hawkins Cheezies, is my ultimate favourite. I'll hide away to eat them so my husband and children don't ask me to share!

  6. Oh my goodness! You are all so funny! I know about those marshmallows. They were everywhere in Everett WA this year. We've had to sponge bathe our boy after eating them around the campfire. I'm so glad to hear there's a better way to do it.

    Congrats on the weight loss!

  7. When I saw the picture of the marshmallows, it made me chuckle b/c my oldest teen loves to freeze them too and use them in batting practice! He says the large ones are perfect. What a waste of a good thing! My latest go-to treat is choc. chunk greek yogurt with a few Tblsp. of melted peanut butter and crushed low fat graham cracker mixed in. Tastes like peanut butter pie without the guilt! Congrats on your weight loss, you are an inspiration in so many ways!

  9. Jeanette, I love reading all of your blog posts and the personal ones are the icing on the cake! You are such an inspiration with your healthy eating. This post made me smile....and add jumbo marshmallows to my grocery list! My go to treat is 1 small piece of really good dark chocolate!.

  10. Jeanette, you are so funny - I love that you are sharing this about yourself! I'll share too, since you asked! I always have dark chocolate in the house. I prefer the Lindt with sea salt so that is what is usually in the closet. I buy them by the dozens and my friends have learned to give them as gifts to me. I don't eat the whole thing at once (again, all about portion control!) but just a piece of one (usually one piece a day). Hugs!! You are not alone.

  11. Jeanette, you are such an inspiration! I love marshmallows and have a bag of the jumbos in my baking drawer in the kitchen! Every now and then I sneak one and savour! My downfall, though, is Nutella spread. I like to take a banana or some apple slices and dip them in this wonderful Hazelnut and chocolate spread. Heaven!!

  12. Jeanette, Congratulations on the recent weight gone -- never coming back (I don't like to say lost, because I never want to find mine-ever again) You certainly have the right attitude about portions and not giving up your favorite treat. I like apples and peanut butter, crackers and cheese. Lately with all the baking of Christmas cookies I have to hide them or eat them all.
