The 6th Day of Thanksgiving: Sunday Dinners

You know how much I love to cook and I consider myself to be a pretty good cook. However, my favorite day to cook is on Sundays, when I bring my entire family together for a traditional Sunday dinner.

I invite my grown children home and the grandchildren get to play with each other, their aunties and uncles, and of course Nana and Papa. We sit around the table and have a really great time. Ashley and Jared have become quite good storytellers over the years, so it is very entertaining. I love the chance to interact and to catch up with them as my children tell what's going on in their lives. We laugh a lot… and it feels good. I cherish these times we have together.

We love simple food but we all love it with a lot of flavor. Last Sunday we enjoyed one of our favorite meals. We started with spinach salad with sweet strawberries, candied pecans, feta cheese, and a creamy balsamic vinegarette dressing. Then we brought out the seasoned steaks, garlic and herb roasted potatoes, old-fashioned green beans, and homemade bread rolls from scratch. Mmmmmm!

Last but not least we finished with hot apple cobbler and ice cream. We’ve been making it for years and it’s become a real family favorite. I love simple recipes, don’t you? Here it is for you to try with your family.

Apple Cobbler
Preheat the oven to 350.
2 large cans of light syrup pear halves, drained.
1 large can of apple pie filling
1 small can of apple pie filling
1 box of yellow cake mix
1 cup of oats
2 sticks of butter

1. Prepare a 9 x 13 glass dish by spraying it with non-stick baking spray.
2. Pour the drained pears in the bottom of the dish and mash them with a fork or a potato masher.
3. Pour the apple filling on top of the pears and mix together.
4. Mix together the oats and the cake mix and evenly distribute the mix on the pie filling and pears.
5. Slice the butter in ¼” slices and place them evenly on top of the cake mix.
6. Place the cobbler in the pre-heated oven for 30 minutes until the cake mix on top turns golden brown.
7. Serve hot with a scoop of vanilla bean ice cream. Enjoy!

Sundays are my special day to share precious time with my family. I will always be grateful for Sunday dinners. Here’s to family traditions. May the memories of them last a lifetime.

  6. Thank you so much for sharing your traditions with us all. I am anxious to try your cobbler recipe, but had a question... I have only ever seen one size of apple pie filling. Could you tell me what size of cans you are using so that I can make adjustments? Thanks so much...
