I have a mystery memory. It happened years ago, when my two oldest children were small, and it was terribly funny at the time. It was funny, and embarrassing. I’ll never tell anyone what it is, so don’t ask! (Hence the mystery.)
The reason I hang on to this memory is that it still has the ability to make me laugh. And not just a little giggle, it’s a laugh so hard I could snort. Whenever I’m burdened, or tired, or even grumpy, my children say, “Mom—think about that thing … you know, the thing that makes you laugh.” And I do. I close my eyes and dredge up that “mystery memory.” I start grinning, then I give a little chuckle, and pretty soon I’m shaking with laughter. Whatever challenge was looming immediately disappears with a good, solid, unrelenting laugh. Sometimes I laugh so hard I can’t stop. And it’s wonderful!
I love knowing that no matter what kind of day I’ve had, a hearty laugh is just a “mystery memory” away!

Well, I hope you have that memory secretly recorded away somewhere. What a treasure to your children to open up one day and find out what mom was laughing at all those years. You have a library full of memories Jeanette! Everyone should be so lucky. Love to read them all :0)
ReplyDeletewhat a fun thing and how wonderful something that happened so many years ago can still make you snort.
ReplyDeleteHopefully you've written down the mystery or someone knows it so that it can always be passed down to generations.
Jeanette, I have a few mystery memories too! My children even share some of them with me and we don't even have to say a word to each other; one glance and we're all laughing until we can hardly breathe. It's such a blessing to have laughter in our lives!

I need to find my own "mystery memory". I am a mother of 3 under the age of 3 (my youngest being 3 weeks old) and I find myself needing to laugh more due to lack of sleep and patience. Thank you for giving me something to look for or create for those tough moments.
