Spotlight on Art: Mix and Match

Remember that game that they played on Sesame Street – one of these things is not like the others? They would always have a few similar items and then add in an item that didn’t fit in with the other things, and the game was to pick out the item that didn’t belong. Well, today’s artwork takes B&T papers from four different My Reflections kits from the Spring / Summer 2012 Idea Book and mixes them together in such a way that it looks like they all came out of the same package.

In creating this page, our art studio artist intentionally chose a pattern from Reflections that used small pieces of B&T so she could make use of the odds and ends of paper that are often left over after you’ve used a paper pack for a number of projects. This page gives you a taste of papers from the new Stella, Florentine, Lucy, and Pemberley paper packs.

Here’s another look at those same four papers. The color scheme works beautifully, and the patterns are quiet enough to work together harmoniously. With some stamping, you could get a similar look using Cardstock instead, but using B&Ts gives you a head start on adding texture to your project.

In this project, the Tulip paper from Stella really shines as a flower accent. Using multiple stamped images from a set is a great way to tie together papers from different sets.

You can have a lot of fun using this technique, so give it a try! If you have a lot of paper scraps that you want to use, try looking for colors and patterns that complement one another. Add in some neutrals as needed and get creative!
